WTF are you talking about? 5th gear has always been a taller gear thus, it's the overdrive. "Scam to make more money", please.

in the old days
top gear was 1 to 1 ratio
BUT if top gear was less than 1 to 1 it was called overdrive

back in 74 my truck had 5 gears and top gear was ovwerdrive and it was called a 5 speed stick

Overdrive IS just another gear...manual or automatic tranny. Its not like some special magic happens when you put it into overdrive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overdrive_%28mechanics%29

now back in the 40's and 50's you could order a car with a overdrive in it, and it was a separate unit behind the transmission
but with the ease of making 4 and 5 speeds they just change the ratio so
the top gear you have is a overdrive gear and you just shift into it like any other gear !

and you had to make sure you were not in OD when at a stop light ( like coming into a town after driving for 2 hours on the freeway . and if a kid was at the light and raced his engine and you forgot to take it out of OD and you "womped on the gas , well you lost overdrive and had a miserable time finding a replacement and lost several hours of your life under the car !
