Hitch Ball Mount / Receiver Bar

A friend of mine has a Hitch Ball Mount / Receiver Bar that belonges to a 4Runner (Toyota Part # PT228 - 89445) that I can have. I know the one for my Tacoma is Toyota Part # PT228-00950. Does anyone know what the difference is?
When I called my local Toyota dealer and talked to the parts department they could not tell me what the difference was just that it would work. Anyone ????

Thanks!!!

I kept the one from my 04 4Runner and it works fine, never bothered to check part numbers. I'm not an expert, but I dont see how they can be much different if at all.

I'd imagine you'd be good to go, I'm no towing expert though haha. I just picked up my ball and mount at an auto parts store.

I'd try it out, especially since it's free. However, if you look at aftermarket hitches (uhaul/valley) the hitches mount differently between an 09 taco and 4 runner.

Update

The Hitch Ball Mount / Receiver Bar that belonges to a 4Runner (Toyota Part # PT228 - 89445) will not work on my 09 Tacoma. I can't put the pin in because the hole wont line up. The shaft that goes into the hitch need to be longer before the hole will line up to put the pin in. I guess I will have to buy the correct part #.

Wow. I'm sorry to hear that. I didnt mean to steer you wrong. Maybe its the difference between an '08 and '09. Or the year of the 4Runner hitch. But, as you can see from the pics mine fits fine.

You dident steer me wrong at all! Its just strange that your fits and mine don't. The Toyota Oem Part # for Tacoma is the same # for yours and mine. I guess I'll try to sell this one to help pay for the Tacoma one.

I just noticed that the part # Toyota Part # PT228 - 89445 for a 4runner that I have is a different # then the one you have (PT228-89340) Yours is for a 2003 and the one I have is for a 2007. This must be the differance.

I have a ball mount from 04 4runner (PT228-89445).

The Pin hole is at 1 1/2" which is short for my 09 tacoma (needs about 2").
That shorter shaft/pin location is why it did not fit my tacoma.

Yeah, mine came with my '04 when I got it, which I guess is the same as the '03. Hope you can sell the other one for at least close to what it costs ya for new.

-go to a machine shop and get a new hole cut in the ball mount for $20 if the hole doesn't line up.

Thats good idea. My job has a machine shop. I will have to check how far from the end the hole will be.

That crossed my mind for about 5 seconds.
It appeared that the resulting distance between the design hole and a new hole would be less than 1/2". I do not know about metal strengths so bagged that idea. Not to say it will not work

Got a ball mount with ball at Checker for 'bout $25.
