Taco Horn Replacement.

Is there a louder sounding horn replaceable on the Taco WITHOUT going to an airhorn and the related tank, compressor/pump, etc.

I just want a change out and wire hook-up that's louder.

Any member experiences before wasting money?

 

I'm not sure what the spec for the stock tacoma horn is but there are electric horns made for boats that put out well over 120 db.

 

I did that. Doesn't seem to make much difference. People still seem unaware of the horn when they're almost hitting me when I lay on it. I swear nothing short of train horns will wake some of these idiots up!



I may have to look into those boat horns mentioned above.

 

I put in a set of Hella Supertone horns in my 96 Tacoma. They were cool
(& LOUD).

Yeah, I removed the plastic things out of my 07 horns. They're loud enough - atleast until I run outta other things to buy for the truck (that might be a long time).

 

My problem is people have cut me off or tried to merge into my line while they are even with me, and when I lay on the horn they don't seem to hear it. Either they are completely F-ING oblivious to what's going on around them, or this horn sucks.

My solution is to do a set of train horns like PB on TN. That way they'll either shit their pants, or look around to see WTF is going on and pay attention.

But this all goes back to my idea that there should be more driver education before unleashing them on the public. But that's another rant, and my plans for train horns are more likely to happen.

 

How big are those Hellas? I was thinking about picking up a set.

I bought the Hella Supertones off ebay and will let you know a subjective evaluation of the sound differences.

I listened to my horn from inside with door/windows closed and outside near the front of the car as well for my base line.

 

You get a pair of them (I think). I mounted mine side by side right in the middle of the grill on the 96. They're loud - but not a 'deep' (manly) sound.

 

how bout throwin a train horn on it. or is that the same thing as a air horn... i dont know, im dumb today.

 

Train horns are big air horns.... Think of sizes going from those used by big rigs to ones for trains up to ones used by ships. I've seen a few for ships on trucks, but they take up the whole roof or bed!

Train horns are usually louder and can still fit under the hood or under the body depending on what size you get.

It's embarrassing to say now, but it just occurred to me that, in the past month that I've owned my truck, I have no idea what the horn sounds like. That's probably something that I should have looked at during the test drive, I suppose, but I had too many other questions about other aspects of the truck. I haven't had any occasion to use the horn in traffic since I bought it.

Actually...I have multiple occasions to use my horn every day since I drive through Atlanta rush hour and deal with improper lane changers in front of me several times each trip. I figure that karma will get the best of them in the end, though, so I don't honk at them.

I'll try the horn out at my earliest convenience.

 

Thanks ER. I do think that maybe the Taco horn is a bit weak - or the cab is insulated so well It doesn't seem as loud.

Now that I have lived with the Hellas for a while, I'm VERY glad I put them on.

I use them selectively though. But when you're horns are at head level of others and you need them and especially if there is an open window, they give off quite and impression.

The tire installers saw them and asked his buddy to look at something under the hood while I was waiting for my Revo's to be installed.

I was thinking, "What the H..." are they looking at, when they guy got under the hood, his buddy blew the horn and they all said a Fuk U to each other and had a good laugh.

So did I.

Loud, but not too loud to be arrested for and no airtank compressor to maintain, install and worry about.
