air intake good?

just wondering if anyone has had luck with k&n air intakes? their website says it give the 4L engine 10 horses. Is this true? and is it worth the money? many thanks

 

its hard to gain a lot of hp/torque out of the 4.0's plus we pretty much have a cai in the stock air filter. personally id get something else. they do sound good though, and you might see a minor increase in mpg. not worth the money if you are looking for mpg increase.

I talked to the guy at URD when I got my MAF sensor. He told me that K&N were the worst ones. He said the URD one, air rade( maybe) and then some other one. Call him up, he will let ya know

 

A lot of folks have stayed away from the K&N oiled filters for fear of the oil in them screwing up the MAF sensor. I used one for a long time and didn't have any issues. Later switched to the AFE Pro Dry S filter just to be on the safe side. The K&N setup will definitely let your engine breathe better though. I don't know about any proven HP or MPG gains. There's a whole bunch of controversy over that.

 

ive heard 50/50 about the k&n. if i were to get one, id go with trd since its made by toyota's trd department.

Unless you tune after installation, you won't see much if any change. Even with tuning, minimal changes, maybe a 5 horse gain tops.

 

As stated above, the OEM system is already a CAI so I don't see there being much of a gain from an aftermarket CAI unless you're talking about the URD of course. Other than that, no. Replace your OEM filter media with an AFE ProdryS as many of us have done and call it a day.

 

I have a K&N (the chrome tube) with heatshield, and have had ZERO problems with it. Just keep it clean and its good to go. The only reason why I went with K&N is because on www.summitracing.com, somebody made a boo boo and mismarked the price. So, I got it for $97 and some change shipped to my door A week later, price was almost $300

I was told to check the MAF sensor to make sure it stayed clean, and haven't had a single problem. Not sure about any HP gains, but it growls at WOT

i have heard that people lost power with the k&n, so I went with the afe which is the same as the trd(the one in the plastic box) keep your eye out in the buy and sell section you will see a lot of k&n's come up for sale if you want one, but there is a reason they are being sold on there.

 

I had the TRD CAI. I found, outside of the noise, that around 3000rpms's I had a 'little' extra umph. Not much. However, I lost the umph under 1200rpm's. For my driving style (i stay around 2k-2.5k rpms) I never really saw a use for it. The noise was cool, but not my taste. Plus, I found myself just stomping on it to hear the noise. Not good for the MPG. I sold the intake after 300mi's and added the AFe Pro-Dry S. Very happy with that. Lets more air in, got my low rpm tourqe back and sounds great. No cabin noise, nothing just great performance. Highly recommened. If the noise is your taste, and you love to hit the gas then it is for you. If not, go Pro-Dry S.

Yea, would not be the best for offroading but one of the best CAI's for the guys that stay on the road. If you want increased power, your better off getting some decent headers instead of a CAI.

As far as offroad use, would it be better to go with an intake that suctions from underneath the hood?
