ok theres three levels of tacos for prerunners and 4x4s
prerunners are just 2wd trucks on the 4x4 chassis they look the same
base model had black fender flares grill and bumpers

sr5 add cruise power windows locks colour matches flares and front bumper chrome rear bumper and grill and keyless entry

trd sport and offroad add sport seats tow package and some other electronic nick nacks outside temp compass steeringwheel controls 120v bed outlet
sport gets a limited slip differential a hood scoop colour matched grill and rear bumper
offroad gets a locking rear differential loos the same as an sr5 other than the trd decals

for the reg 2wd (5 luggers)
theres the base model black bumpers and grill

and sr5 add power keyless entry 120v bed outlet and a few other things only available in a 4cyl

    See build thread in signature
TRD is only in the 4.0L v6, access cab or double cab.

Also note the sport has colormatched pieces everywhere (side mirrors, door handles, bumpers, ect) in addition to the 'fake' hood scoop.

If you're gunna do any wheeling, get a 4x4 TRD Off-Road, or at least 4x4.

Thanks guys, based on all this information, I want a 4x4 access cab trd v6 manual (5 or 6sp?)? Does that exist? Would that be a short bed or a long bed or does it only come with one?

6 speed manual. Since you're going with the access cab, you'd have the 6 foot bed on either TRD model. If you were going double cab, you'd get the short bed regardless of having the TRD Sport of TRD Off Road model. On the TRD Sport you can opt for the long bed, but not on the TRD Off Road. But since you want an access cab that's a moot point for you.

Stick on hood scoop from Autozone.

In New York, he will need 4x4. :p

If he were in Southern California, I'd suggest a PreRunner. :D
