    Vehicles with AWD like subaru and audi use systems that power all wheels which is great for handling, but allow a wheel to slip if it needs to. AWD can get stuck easier then a 4x4 system. The downside is if weather is bad but not bad enough for 4x4, or your going faster then 35mph, (think manual says 65mph but I keep my speeds lower in 4x4) then your stuck in rear wheel drive with not much weight in your rear. AWD can be used at any speed.

    When I was young I never read manuals because I though I was smart enough to figure things out. The result was bollixing up more things than I can remember. Now I always read manuals. Good thing I learned these lessons before I bought a house and a new truck. If you are under thirty I’d say lesson learned. If you are over thirty and are still making these kinds of mistakes you’ve got problems.

    I'm not trying to be a smartass know it all I just want you to know both front wheels aren't spinning at the same speed unless you have a front locker. What is happening though is the xcase is spinning the front diff the same speed as the rear diff. Just informing, I don't want this to be taken the wrong way.

    So is that the point of binding? Is our front transfer case able to slip then? I though because of the same rotation speed throughout the different cases the output of the front shafts couldn't compensate when turning.

    It doesn’t bind in slippery conditions. It grabs and hauls your ass where you want to go.

    The xcase doesn't slip unless something is wrong. It would need a differential in it.

    I think everything is stressed, tires, driveshafts, xcase etc.

    I'm not saying it binds when using it correctly. I think toyota's 4x4 systems have worked well in the tacomas stock for years, and even better modified. .

    My 94" first gen didn't bind up on pavement at all...

    The transfer case can bind....but the binding that most people feel is due because of making turns while in 4WD (on high traction surfaces). The CV JOINTS are the problem.

    The only way I can explain this....is... your CV axles are similar to a U-joint or this swivel socket.

    It's far more difficult to apply rotational force (DRIVE) to the wheels when the CV joints are bent (like in the picture). And since an OPEN differential should compensate for the inner & outter wheel differences.....it still can't apply driving force to either of them when even ONE of the CV joints is binding up - and hence why the truck doesn't want to move. When you straighten the wheels, it makes it easier to move. When you disengage 4WD - it removes the DRIVE to the front axle.
