I used to put about 210lbs in the bed every winter....and that really messes with the gas mileage. Back when the gas was $4+ a gallon, I stopped carrying anything in the bed over the winters. I haven't had any trouble - but then again, I live in PA - and I don't see a whole lot of snow.
I have stock tires and they are getting 'thin' - I might air down a bit and see how that goes for me. I'm not really worried about it too much and I haven't bothered putting the weight back in.

I made it to Oregon in the prerunner with 210Lbs of sand over the axle and prolly another 50lbs of gear in the cab, new tires helped and keep ur gas tank filled..............
Most important adjust ur tire pressure, dont abuse the skinny pedal, watch ur speed in turns, and allow ample stopping distance. You must use ur head.........Some people just dont have common sense, as evidenced by some threads on here..... Im sure others with chime in with more advice soon enough. Id also suggest getting a recovery strap, and of course tire chains. Try practicing with the chains a lot....Its gunna be even harder when u need to put em on in the snow. Edit: seems like Janster had the same weight reccomendation funny.

pshh you dont neeeeed 4x4 in snow. I only use 4wd in deep stuff or non plowed roads. Last year in western ny we got 11ft of snow in 7 days. My father in his S10 had about 160lbs with street tires. I on the other hand was toting 750lbs in my unstoppable 2500hd but thats another story. As far as weight i would keep about 3-4 sand bags. about 160lbs. against the tailgate with good tires

I bought 4 60 pound bags but I think I will only leave three of them in...

I never thought about putting weights on the back. I guess that's the plus side of living in the city. I should though. A little weight just in case.

No weight at all. Added weight greatly affects braking distance in the winter. I just stick the truck in 4wd and go.
When I had my 2wd f150 I used sand bags. I think it was about 200lbs. It helped but is nothing compared to 4x4. I'll never be getting a 2wd again. |

I have zero experience driving in the snow, but I have a wedding to go to in December in Tahoe. I've got 4x4, but I'm more concerned about my tires. I've got the Rugged Trails with about 25k on them and in dirt alone it was pretty slippery. Anyone else running these tires and have experience in the snow.

I use no weight in the bed over winter and have had no issues.

I made it to Oregon last Christmas with a cab full of people, a bed full of stuff and a tank full of gas plus chains and recovery gear. I had prolly close to 600 lbs in the bed plus the weight of fuel and ppl in the cab so I had plenty of weight on the tires in the snow.
I just made sure to always have my recovery gear, chains, and a full tank of 91 octane when ever I drove in the snow. I never let the tank get below 3/4 full cuz I needed that weight. |

Since this is my first truck I was really nervous the first winter. I bought a couple tubes of sand and carried them around for the first few snows. I could hardly get it to lose traction even if I want it to
. It was no fun at all. So I took out the sand tubes. I found out I didn't even need them. I have had no issues at all. It has to get pretty bad before I even use the 4x4. A couple sand tubes definitely make it more stable though.

Buffalo here
I have never put weight in the back of the truck. Its not worth the hassle of it sliding around, moving it if i want to put somthing in the back of the truck. Its quite simple, if i start losing traction, i put it in 4x4. If not, it stays in 4x2. Spend the money for some good tires, duratracs have a 10 for snow rating. |

Im my old reg cab 2000 Tacoma I ran ~150 pounds of tube sand. It was just enough to keep me going, most of the time in 2wd, with the esception of a few nasty intersections. In my current 2008 double cab i ran no weight last year and drove fine in snow deeper than my bumper.
