I received a call from the dealership. They told me that there is a TSB out now for the Throwout bearing problem and Toyota is currently working on the fix. There is nothing that they can do to my truck until they have the correct fix from Toyota. What a waste of brining my truck in. I am at 55,000 miles right now and the waranty covers up to 60,000 miles or 5 years. He did say that since they have it on record now that the problem was occuring at 55,000 miles, they might honor the waranty if I exceed the 60,000 miles. I now have to sit and wait until they call me letting me know the parts are completed.

I'm taking mine in for a 2nd throwout bearing replacement at 68 000 km (42 000 miles). Brutal. The truck is scheduled to go in next week. If I get the TSB, I'll post it here.

So far replaced on my 2008 Tacoma: fan motor (now chirping again), throwout bearing (clutch plates were also replaced as a result of the bad bearing), power steering rack, front differential ('internal failure'). I generally drive the truck as if I can't afford to fix it (very, very gently driven). This is ridiculous. But hey, it looks nice in the driveway.

I think I have the same issue as other people, but mine only makes the sound when my shifter is in 1st, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd and I am coasting with clutch depressed (like going around a corner). It is really fucking annoying, so I always drive with the radio on. I only have 6,000 miles on her too. I think i'm going to call my dealer.

I just called my dealer and he said that he had heard about it but couldn't find the tsb number either but that he is going to look for it. He said that I should bring it in when I get a chance so they can look at it, but that they have found there to be a problem. I also asked them about the tsb for the leaf springs (if you check other threads people want this done but can't get their dealers to do it) and he straight up asked me if I wanted it done? I was kinda in shock. Makes me actually trust my dealer! haha. I'll let you know what happens when I take it in and if it gets fixed. I guess this a good step forward though if the service manager acknowledges that there is an issue tho

does anybody have actual numbers on the trucks affected with this problem? for 2009 toyota sold 111,824 tacomas. thats in one year. since 05 to '10 how many thousands have been sold with a six speed?

my point in asking is are we driving our trucks harder than normal? this is a site where we many talk about modifying, off roading, racing our trucks. basiclly pushing them to the edge. i'm not trying to defend toyota as i'm a first time buyer. i bought into the hype that they are the best thing on the road. i've owed nothing but gm and one ford in my life and it would really suck that i buy the one toyota with a ton of problems.

Thought it wouldn't happen to me...

I bought my 09 V6 SR5 6 speed MT Taco last summer w/ 6k mi on it and a week later found this site and read about this problem.

Today, 12/3/10 @ 32500 mi (90% highway), I noticed the dreaded chirp for the 1st time. Reading like every posting in this thread I am really discouraged at this point, however recent posts suggest that Toyota might actually be addressing this?

Does anyone know if a TSB is actually issued? Is it a re-design or is it just an acknowledgment that the bell housing should be replaced as soon as the sound is first heard (as the chirp indicates the pilot shaft is beginning to wear etc)?

I love my truck and don't want to get rid of it, but if it is going to be an endless money pit and a ticking time bomb every 30k miles I think I might consider selling it while the miles are still low and opting for something different.

Very disappointed. I guess I'll start calling around and trolling for a stealership w/ a conscience.

I just got call from my dealer and he said that after they ran the diagnostic test, the found the fluid in my transmission to have too much "metal" in it. Whatever that means. Anyways, they are going to give me a brand new transmission. I had mentioned it to him that this thread was talking about the bell housing and the difference in metals being the problem and he said that wasn't the issue. He also said that they have only replaced 3 transmissions in three years and this is really rare. Not sure exactly what to think, as I too am going to be really pissed off if this doesn't fix it. Anyways, more info to come after I get the new transmission which won't be for a few days because of christmas. Merry Christmas everybody!

Great news - so i called Toyota early in the month and got a case number for the throwout bearing noise problem. Really nice rep I spoke with. I told him about the forum and my self diagnosis and he chuckled and said 'dont believe everything you read on the internet' but he did acknowledge they were getting quite a few calls on this 'very unique' transmission. Anyways since I only had 34k mi he recommended a local dealership (which has serviced the truck before - see my posts about squeaky clutch pedal). Got there on 12/27 finally - was advised a brand new TSB for this and the tech confirmed the noise and started digging in.

Summary on receipt:

THROW OUT BEARING NOISE. VERIFIED CUSTOMER NOISE WHEN NO PRESSURE WAS ON CLUTCH PEDAL. REMOVED TRAN TO INSPECT. PERFORMED TSB-0365-10. TSB STATED TO INSPECT CLUTCH. FOUND CLUTCH COVER WORN AND HEAT MARKS ON CONTACTING SURFACE. FOUND FLYWHEEL ALSO HEAT CHECKED. CLUTCH DISC WAS STARTING TO WEAR UNEVEN ON THE INNER CONTACTING EDGE. REPLACED ALL CLUTCH COMPONENTS.

All was free and covered under the powertrain 3yr/36k.

Truck is driving like a dream right now. Very happy with dealership. The mechanic took me out and showed me all his findings and basically said he was going to do about 1500 worth of work (who knows?). Very glad it went well.

Well about 5k miles ago the squeak came back for the third time. Every time I go in for an oil change they pull the tranny cause that's how long it takes for it to come back. They smoothed out the pilot shaft by sanding it

Well I took it in for the oil change last week, and told him it was back. Now they have the tsb for it, so they are doing that. I'll get it back in a couple days. I'm not too confident that this is going to actually fix the problem though. I guess we'll see in about 5k miles.

oh yeah, I was two weeks out of the 5yr/50k warranty, but they honored it anyway cause the issue started long ago and was well documented.

got mine done 10/12/11

i complained about it at around 30k miles and they said it wasn't making any abnormal noises.
so this time when i went in i asked for a service manager to come out and listen to it before i dropped it off. I made him acknowledge that it made abnormal noise and that it went away with the pedal depressed. he called me later and said that the tech found a faulty clutch release bearing and that there was a bulletin to upgrade it and that it was covered under 60k powertrain warranty. Mine was at 59598 when i dropped it off. I was gracious and played dumb and thanked him. Little did he know the printed out tsb was in the glovebox the whole time if he were to give me a hard time.
Everyone's happy, especially me. Was hoping for a new clutch too but apparently mine's still fine. Seems to begin engaging a little sooner, maybe i'm imagining that, but the silence sounds great.

Just took mine in. This is what was written on my receipt:
"Inspected Clutch Pedal and found that grommets were dry causing squeek. Lubed grommets and tested pedal. Squeek is no longer present. If problem returns and persists then we will have to replace clutch pedal grommets and spring."

Got home and it turns out the chrip is still present. I'm thinking they didn't understand why I brought it in to begin with. About to have some lunch and then head back.

Update

Took it back to the dealer to re-explain the chirping. They are replacing the throw out bearing tomorrow. We'll see how long it lasts.
