I just got off the phone with a toyota parts center, and they told me I wasnt able to get the Trail Teams center caps.. I had to buy a set of wheels for it...(WTF) However the guy did tell me that he was willing to sell me the center caps for 48 dollars A PIECE...and the funny thing that they are willing to sell me the silver ones for 12 bucks.. Should I just get the silver ones and paint them black..?

I posted the link in my first post. they were on trdparts4u.com

And yeah theres no way anyone should ever have to pay 48 dollars for just 1 center cap. Either paint the silver ones black or dont do it all. No center caps are worth that much

As far as the black ones are concerned,I simply called a local Toyota dealer and ordered four with the part number,$14.99/ea......I think when you start mentioning Trail Teams, the parts guys get squirlly about the restrictions. If you have any hassles,PM me and I'll forward the name of the dealer I used.Once again, thanks to BlackedoutTRD for his pic.....

So does the silver match the silver 17" TRD wheels pretty well?

Perfect match. Not quite as tight as the stock caps, but a dab of silicon sealant at a couple of the clips keeps them on.

That's good to know. Im gonna buy these when I get back. So are you saying they have a slight possibility of falling off?

Well, not falling off, but probably not as secure as the stock caps under stress.

The hook-like clips on the stock caps are thicker and have more lip to catch on the wheel. I needed a tool (plastic upholstery wedge) to get them off.

The TRD caps are an older design; the clips have shorter lips and thinner plastic, and the inside of the 'hook' is sort of rounded. There's a scalloped metal ring joining all the clips, and the ends of the ring are connected together by a spring. Once attached to the wheel, the TRD caps can be removed by hand if you pry up on the clips that are on either side of the spring (they're the two below the 'TRD' logo when the logo is oriented properly to read it -- if that makes sense). The other four clips provide a more solid attachment.

So yeah, I think there's a slight possibility of them coming off in some situations, unless you give at least those two hooks some help, like sealant. Mine have been on about 8 weeks, handling some twisty and rough backroad pavement as well as cruising between 80-85 on I-77, -20, -85, and -95. No problems so far. Heck, at $7+ a pop, I can afford to lose a few.

Yeah for that price it's worth it. So you just add some sealant to the clips and it should be alright?

    Yep

Back of TRD cap. Arrows point to weakest clips, on either side of spring that connects ring:

Apply sealant/caulk to this surface of clips (at least to the two weakest):

Furthur to the silicone advice.....I would NOT run mine without. The fit is just a little too loose, but a year+ after installing mine with a dab on the tabs, they are still tight and secure. When I put new tires on a couple of months ago the center caps had to come off to balance.I did this myself before I took the truck to the tire shop so that one of the guys didn't get frustrated and ruin them taking them off. They pried off with minimal effort and when I re-installed them I cleaned off the old sealant, reapplied, let the truck sit over night to allow for set-up and no problems still.

    Great pics above too!

    Thanks!

Good to hear that the sealant works in a climate a bit colder than ours. I wouldn't trust the dealer or any tire mechanic with my caps either.

Mine have been on for about 3 or 4weeks. And, yes they are a little more loose then the stock. I wrapped a few layers of tape around the metal spring at each tab. This made it tighter. I might still add the sealant, but so far so good.

Oh, and the color is a match.
