Runaway tacoma i can't believe it!

I just can't believe it actually happened to me! I was driving to work this afternoon and I went to make an aggressive pass around a vehicle in the left lane and it happened! The truck down shifted & was pulling high revs & the accelerator pedal got stuck on wide open throttle! First I tried to hit the brakes & that didn't do a whole lot then I tried to tap on the accelerator to see if that would free it no luck so I hooked my foot under it and was able to pull it up. When I first heard about this I told my wife that it was a bull-sh** problem. So I zip-tied the mat & put it back in. Apparently it's not tied back far enough. I can definitely see how in a panic situation on smaller streets this could get ugly. I was on the interstate with an open lane in front of me. Called the dealer & Toyota. I have an appointment for tomorrow afternoon to remedy & put the wife at-ease.

 

Wow man. I'm glad you're ok. I honestly think its B.S too but like you said. It can happen to you. That goes with everything in life. Its not bad until it happens to you or someone you love.

Glad to hear you're okay. Sort of scares me that it's starting to happen here in TW. Maybe the problem is growing as the time passes. Has anyone else experienced this problem yet?

 

Thanx for the well-wishes. I will try to take pictures of the mat & accelerator pedal & try to recreate the pedal getting stuck without the engine running tomorrow just to see if it will do it again. And I will up-date tomorrow afternoon what the remedy from the dealer will be. Maybe they can retrieve the event from the computer to verify what all happened.

I've got the Toyota all weather mats and with them mounted properly with the hooks, I can't see any way that the pedal could get caught on the mat. I remember having a look at it when the stuck pedal thing first came out and the "cut-out" part of the mat where the pedal sits looks plenty big enough with lots of space around it.

Are you using the hooks?

 

I heard that it's a computer problem. The accelerator pedal no longer works by cable, that's old school, now they call it drive by wire, the computer controls it and the computer is f-ing up. I can't remember they reason, but bottom line it's not the mat.

 

Easy way to fix this problem. Get manual. har har!

Seriously tho i will try and replicate that with the mats toyota sold me. Should be interesting.

 

My accelerator pedal hasnt gotten stuck in cases previously mentioned. It has, however, happened when I use cruise control (and it happens at least once every trip) . Ill set my speed and drive for a while and decide I wanna speed up so I use the cruise control lever/controls to increase my speed and it wont stop speeding up at which point I usually have to cancel the cruise control mode. It works perfectly fine when Im coasting in cruise, but when I start hitting the lever up to increase speed, it wont stop increasing it. Pretty scary the first time I experienced it, Now I just look out for it and cancel cruise control when it occurs. Ill have to take it in to Toyota when I go to get my radio TSB done.

 

I have read that the only thing they're going to do for you is remove the driver side floormat until they find a remedy for this.

It happend to me a few years ago but I just wrote it up as a lazy dumbass that didnt put the mats back in the right way.

 

I have the facrory carpet mats & I stopped using the hooks when I decided to zip-tie the mat to the seat.

 

Happened to me in November of last year. Rolled the truck, thank god I was going so slow when it happened so it only rolled once and hit a dirt pile. Gulf States Toyota replace the throttle body, ecu, and accelerator assembly, no problems since that happened.

 

No need to replicate. Toyota recalled all the Tacomas for this problem. They know.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the angle of the accelerator pedal... ?

 

I just want to see for myself that it was held up on the mat. At 85 mph on I-95 I wasn't able really look at it.

 

Im just wondering,could it be the cruise control location?I have a 2010 corolla recently bought and the on/off switch to the CC is in a position that can easily be switched on by accident without noticing unless you look in the instrument cluster.It may keep the revs steady but will not increase though.
