Can someone tell me what the 4 next to Drive is?

When you put the truck in drive you can also slide the shifter to the left to 4? What is that and why? Thanks

 

4th Gear?

 

Just a guess as I have the 6 speed, but I would imagine that would be 4th gear. The auto is a 5 speed correct?

In most automatic vehicles, any "number" denotes the highest gear that the transmission will go to, meaning it will shift automatically from first, second, etc. but will stop at the gear that you select. So if you have a 5 speed automatic, the four means it will shift all the way to 4th gear, and then stay there, even to the rev limiter.

Otherwise, read the manual.

lol...hey I just got this truck. I'm coming from a 1998 frontier...give me a break..haha

 

I know the numbers mean gears but why is it next to D...just seemed odd to me

easy to downshift when you need to i use it on big hills keeps the truck from hunting

 

hmm its a gated shifter. push the shifter to the left of D and you will engage the 4th gear, shift down and get 3rd etc etc

 

It's surprsing how often this gets asked, and suprising how many people have an answer that's totally wrong. sachou nailed it though ^^^

A friend was driving my (auto trans) truck pulling a boat out of the water one time, he said that he put it into 3rd gear so the wheels wouldn't spin. Wrong on so many levels.

 

It is just like other vehicles where you have an o/d switch.. If it's a 5 seed tranny it'll keep it from shifting into overdrive where you have no torque when towing.. It keeps the tranny for searching for gears the whole time

 

I'm just saying how, depending on gear ratios, torque is usually pretty poor in 5th, and if you're towing on hilly terrain any truck will search for gears more. I have a 6spd manual and when I'm towing our boat I rarely see 6th, but it's fairly hilly around us as well.

 

Simply put "4" would be a shift pattern of gear 1-4, not using 5th gear. Likewise "2" would only allow 1-2nd gear or just 2nd only for winter driving on some types of autos, check the manual for that.

 

whatever the gears are for, I like to usem to slow myself down when offroading downhill so my brakes dont heat up. Am I in the wrong here?

Never ever put the shifter over to the 4! Doing so will rip a hole in time and space causing all matter to explode!!
