Eclipse BEC-108 Back-up Camera Install in '09 Tailgate Handle

So I've had an Eclipse AVN6620 for a while now and have wanted to hook up a back-up camera. I have no huge purpose for a camera, but I thought since I have a headunit that allows for one, why not? I haven't tried hooking up to a trailer yet with it, but from the looks of it, it'll be 100% easier.

I got my hands on an '09 tailgate handle with the OEM camera thinking that I could try and wire it up to the Eclipse headunit. Tried thinking of ways on how to wire it up, but didn't feel like dealing with it. The Eclipse headunit uses a 4 pin molex connection to run power and video feed for the camera, not a audio/video type cable. So, I bought the most recent Eclipse camera, the BEC-108, and mounted it. Since the headunit is already wired to the reverse wire, there was no need to splice anything. Just had to run the cable. The camera operates when the truck is engaged into reverse or manually turned on through the menu.

Even though Eclipse (Fujitsu Ten) is the company that makes Toyota stereos and cameras, the camera wasn't a direct fit into the handle. Especially because the new BEC-108 is a bit smaller in height and depth dimensions. The width comparison between the two cameras is the same.

sorry for some of the blurry pics.

plug that goes into the back of the headunit:

handle opening, slightly modified. had to file down the top portion of the opening a bit:

OEM camera bracket with Eclipse BEC-108 bracket. The brackets are attached together with 3M tape and two very tiny self-tapping screws:

I than ran the wire in loom and down the frame rail on the passenger side. The wire entered the cab through one of the rubber grommets in the floor. The wire was then ran behind the glove box and to the back of the unit.

money shots:

(the pictures don't do justice. the image looks a lot better in person)

shot with truck in park and the camera manually turned on:
(NO OEM reverse lights and NO aux reverse lights)

The pictures do not do any justice as to how good the camera really is. I'll try to take some other pics and post them up. I'll get some day pics as well.

And the new OEM camera that is for sale:
(camera works perfectly, has been tested in another '09 vehicle to verify, is in great shape, and I'm willing to entertain offers on it. comes with connector so someone could wire it up to an aftermarket headunit. you would just need to purchase the '09 tailgate handle.)

I mounted mine to my black license plate frame. You can barely see it.

I dont have the tailgate theft mod done, so I didn't want someone jacking my tailgate and f**king up my wiring from a camera location in the handle.

I have the same model camera and the previous model AVN unit... they are both awesome. I love having my camera. I just wish it could be wired such that it could be "always on".

Great post!

Would it be possible to reroute the existing wiring that is attached to the rearview mirror to a head unit with a display in it?

TIA
