    You use a bypass module that triggers when the system wants to start - basically they work by emulating the key usually. The new bypass modules often are data based.

    I agree with rb11701
    I had a compustar remote starter install by the dealer. I got the one way with the long range and have been amazed by the distance i have got the truck to start.
    as far as the key chip, the starter is wired to bypass the key chip and start the truck, they dont just hide the valet key somewhere in the truck like cheap installs do. But you still need the chipped key to turn the ignition and drive away . It has been a great option.

    Don't know how Toyota does it but the old Montero had a box under the dash with an extra key inside so when the remote start was activated the computer got the code from the key in the box under the dash and thought there was a key in the ignition. Don't know how it's set up in the CR-V.

    @Tony D
    I'll have to check into that. I was told it was illegal to have a remote start on a manual transmission in Virginia.

    +1

    5901 also works with the iPhone remote start app.

    And to those that want to go cheaper, they will break or malfunction.

    It's the same as the 5900, just basically with a different remote. I have the 5900 and love it!

    Two ways...to do it...
    A modular unit that gets programmed the same as the key...
    or
    A modualr unit that comes apart that a key gets screwed inside...This box then has a "loop" that goes around the key cyclinder. That send the "pulse" signal when you hit the remstart button. It reads teh signal form the key inside the box.
