P0500

So my speedo and odometer went out yesterday. Along with this the ABS, check engine, and Brake lights came on on the dash.

Code read from scanner is P0500. Any help would be appreciated. I doubt its the wheel sensors, cause all 4 would've had to go out...

Thanks! I'm assuming the auto and manual both have this sensor? Sucks that it went out after 4 1/2 hours into a 5 hour trip out of town for work for 2 weeks. Oh well...sh1t happens...

 

Nevermind. Dumb question. I was scouring that whole manual last night...dont know how I missed that page!

OK, so how do I know if it is Speed Sensor (NT) or speed sensor (SP2)?

 

If you have access to an oscilloscope you can check each sensor individually to determine which one has the fault. If you don't have one, you could possibly take the sensors to a shop and have them tell you which one is bad.

 

What wavform am I looking for? I'm assuming a square wave just indicating pulses?

I got this same problem, replaced all 4 wheel speed sensors, and the 2 on the tranny. None of which seemed to fix the problem, still throwing 2 codes saying the rear two speed sensors are out but I tested both of them on the front and vice versa and they all work. Im assuming it must be in the instrument cluster and has something to do with the speedometer itself?

 

I just had this exact issue, part comes tuesday, taco is useless until then, thanks so much for posting the links to repair manual sheets. I wouldn"t have thought to use ATF and a proper torque for such a small part.

 

I am still having the same problem as well, any fix yet?

 

I added a old school t-case speed sensor and spliced the signal wire in at the abs ecu. Works like a charm. Much thanks to Wyatt for this one.

This is only a option if you have an 06 or older as they stopped knocking the blank out of the tcase casting so new models dont have a place to add this sensor.

 

The speed sensor on the tranny and that didn't work, I found a broken ABS sensor on the right front axle and just replaced it this morning. It drove fine for 3 miles and flipped out again. I then decided to make sure all tires were inflated properly and that the brake fluid was topped off, disconnected the battery for 10 mins again and then took it out for a few 40 mph hard brake tests to engage the ABS system. It seems so far that after the first 2 brake tests it did some sort of self check and reset and all seems fine now.

 

It wasn't the wire, it was the actual senor, cracked in two places, next to the bolt, and the part that goes into the axle was broken off inside. I had to drill and dig it out. It acted up again this morning when I tried to start it but has not been an issue since.

It turns out I had two wires wrong in the harness for my towing, I think I may be problem free now. I hope!
