4x4 making noise while driving in snow.

Hey guy's/ gals...quick question. I have a 06 TRD Sport with the 6 speed, and just this past week have I had to use the 4x4, and I have been noticing almost a mechanical whine noise from the truck while driving...is this normal on the Tacoma? My old 4Runner had the old stick style shift to engage, and it made no noise while driving...I'm curious. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Are you in 4HI when it's doing this? Also, is there a lot of wheel slippage when you're going?

It's while in 4 High. It's like a mechanical whining noise, but the wheels aren't really slipping. It's a lot louder than while in 2 High.

They would have to open up the diff to check level, never seen them do that on a oil change unless they charge you extra for that. The same with greasing the drive shafts. These are simple checks though, if you got a dry and hopefully warm place to do. A small grease gun is fine for doing the drive shafts, as long as your not in 4wd, you can spin the front drive shaft to get to the zerk fittings. you will have to roll the truck to get the back down.
The whine may be just normal, but i would still check the diff to be sure.
Also engage the 4wd every month to keep everything lubed and working.

Yeah, check yourself or have a truck place do it. The speedy lubes of the world are never going to do that.

Might as well do both the front and rear diffs...and like skistory said, lube the shafts.

Guess I'll have to take it to the dealer to have it checked. I bought the truck used with 85,000 kms on it, and had it fully checked out by Toyota, and the previous owner had a reciept from 82,000 kms that said that the 4x4 was checked, and lubed?! Is this sort of thing pretty simple...like it's not gonna cost me an arm and a leg, right?

Its prolly the tcase. mine whines. its the gears. in 4lo the gears spin as if you are in 4hi at high speeds. there isa gear reduction in 4lo but the input shaft is spinning the same speed as in 4hi.

Ex. if it whines at 15mph in 4lo then it will whine in 4hi at 45mph

Like in 4th gear the ratio is 1:1 through the tranny so 2000rpms on the engine the tranny turns 2000rpms. When in 4x the tcase will run other gears to turn the front drive shaft. so 2000rpms in 4hi and 2000 in 4lo will both whine but in 4lo the gear reduction adds noise and the wheels turn much slower. with 4hi your going much faster so you dont notice the noise much.

The whine on mine is noticable at about 60 km/h on up, and gets more pronounced as you step on the gas. I am just worried because my 1993 4Runner never made a noise as pronounced, although it did make some noise, but very faint. Maybe I'll take it to Toyota, and have them go on a little ride to check it out...

X2.

Perfect explanation, I was going to allude to the same thing, just explained differently. It's normal, dont worry about it... gears moving.

I haven't really had any other reason to use the 4x4 for any extended periods of time, so I never really noticed I guess. I snowed a fair amount, then got all packed down to near ice, so I had to use it...that's when I noticed. It's not super loud or anything, but I'm the kind of person that any little sound makes me freak unless I know what it is. If I have the heater/ fan on medium I can't hear it anymore, so it's not loud...

its probably normal. now put the truck into 4hi/4low once a month and you will get used to what it sounds like. Plus everything will get lubed

I just noticed, (but I'm not sure its normal at this point) my truck is alot quieter in 4HI than 2HI. It's actually really quiet once I throw it in 4HI. Even at up to 50 mph. I think I got some issues with my CV's or bearings though.

Hmmm...weird. Mine is definitly louder when in 4HI than 2HI. Maybe it's a difference the auto, and the 6 speed?! I have to get an alignment soon, so I'll get them to check everything out, and lube it at the same time. If something is kaput, then my ECP will take care of it.
