Difference Between 1st & 2nd Gen Taco

I am looking to get my first non-Ford pickup. I want a four door crew cab, and the Tacoma seems to be the best around. New is too expensive, so I am looking at used. Besides the size of the engine, what are the differences between a first generation Tacoma and a second generation Tacoma?

Second Gen. is bigger. I don't think they made a double cab 1st Gen.

wtf are you talking about?? I have a feeling this is gonna turn into a 1st gen vs 2nd gen post. To the OP...depends on your budget and which model exactly you're looking for. These Tacoma's, 1st or 2nd gen hold their value fairly well.

I notice that you have only been on this forum for about 2 months. You need to relax. See the post I made just before yours. Probably crossed in the mail.

OK the differences. The towing capacity is larger in the 2nd Gen 6500 lbs vs 5000lbs. The truck is wider and therefore the inside is much more like a mid-size. The engines smaller 4cyl in the first gen was dropped and now the 2nd gen only have the 2.7 liter. The V6 went from 3.4 to 4.0. Manual tran in the v6 added a gear to make a 6 speed. while the auto v6 added a gear to have a 5 speed auto. the 4 cyl still have 5 speed manual and 4 speed auto. The 4 wheel drive system changed from a manual shift to a electronic switch in the 2nd gens. MPG also increased from 1st to 2nd gens. 2nd gens are available with a TRD sport package as 1st only have the TRD off road. The 1st gens seem to have an un beatable drivetrain (but do have frame rust) and the 2nd gens seem to be having a few problems with the rear suspension and some of the transmission (06 dbl cab with 60k and I haven't had a single issue.) Thats all I could come up wtih. Hope
this helps.

This is MSN autos comparing 1st gens vs. 2nd gens.

None of the above responses really gave the simplest part of the answer! You all seem to know a lot about Tacomas, but I would like to know if there is a model year cutoff? Is my 2006 SR5(?) access cab, 4 cyl. a gen1 or a gen2?
