Is it ok to shift into 4lo from 4hi on a hill climb? I drive a 2009 2.7 5 speed. Do i need to come to a complete stop? Haven't taken the taco off road yet but I plan on headin on out to Hollister Hills soon.

Also one more thing, do you think my stock 2.7 can make it up truck hill @ hollister hills?

Thanks for the input guys! I just joined, this site kicks ass!!!

I think you're supposed to stop and wait til that big gear gets locked in and then from there slowly go up.

If Im wrong, sorry. I've been studing all day today.

Rule of thumb is switch it into neutral and then to 4lo so it can lock... You cant just switch from 4hi to 4lo while driving, bad news. I switch it into neutral and let off the brake so the transfer case can "Rock" into place.

Also, I'm not sure what the Hollister Hills are, but you would be surprised how well your pickup will be able to bounce around in the mountains... My 03 with the V6 had I believe comparably the same power as the new 2.7, and my old Taco was a champion in the mountains.

You probably won't get it to engage- so the light will just flash and the truck will beep at you.

I agree with Mark, you have to stop, not like the old trucks with the stick on the floor where if you got it right, you could do it while still moving slowly.

Don't be afraid to put your truck in 4 Lo and just leave it there while offroading... As long as you don't overrev the engine, use all the gears your truck came with...

Sometimes, I'll drive 40 miles in 4 Lo here in the CO mountains... Leisurely trail ride using 1-4 gears on my auto trans... Obviously, if I have a pretty big open stretch, I'll stop, go back into 4 Hi, and then continue on...

I personally would get into 4lo before attempting a hill climb. On my automatic I need to get into neutral before switching to 4lo, and most of the time I need to crawl forward or back to get the gears aligned and the light to go from flashing to solid. I could be wrong here, but I believe you need to push the clutch in to get into 4lo on your maual, and doing that before the hill climb might be easier.

Awesome... So I can utilize all of my gears in 4lo? I'm gonna have to experiment in my neighborhood tomorrow. Been so busy workin lately my truck hasn't even touched dirt yet and I'm already at about 7,000 miles!

Like others said, put it in 4Lo first. You won't be able to switch it from 4Hi to 4Lo on the fly, it will just beep and tell you to try again.

Just one little thing, 4lo, or 4wd in general, will drive weird on pavement... And 4lo is not made to go very fast

DOn't use any 4x4 on dry pavement....You can get away with it- but it's just asking for trouble.

I mean, as long as I don't go too fast it shouldn't matter right? Or no?

It doesn't really matter going perfectly straight, but turning in 4x4 on dry pavement will bind the drivetrain and cause trouble...

Eh never mind you guys are right, It's not intended for use on pavement... I'll just hit up some empty muddy lot tomorrow... There's some land out at Ryan Ranch near where I live.

Limited turns, not high speed- You can do it...It's not a good idea. If you can find a gravel road or some trails to go run around on you'll be far safer.
Driving on the pavment can lead to driveline binding and serious damage.

Stop on the hill. Brake, put it in N. Put it in 4Lo. Ease off the brake, should enage it in 4Lo, then watch it climb the hill idling...
