2010 Tacoma with a V6 6 spd manual

Why does the manual trans get worse gas mileage then the auto? What kinda fuel mileage are people really getting? I have an 09 F-150 loaded with every option and kinda wanting to downsize and get something smaller and better fuel mileage. My F-150 get 17mpg everytime I fill up. So I was wanting to know if the v6 tacomas will get in the 20's

#1 reason the auto gets better mileage is that the engine and trans are linked through tons of technology...

My '09 DC SB V6 OR 4x4 Auto gets 20-22... less if towing/hauling...

What is that suposed to mean? It's because the final drive ratio was lower on the 6 speed than the auto. That's why at 60mph the 6 speed turns 2,100 rpm and auto turns around 1,200.
They're not THAT much different... At 60 mph, my auto is alot closer to 2000 rpm than 1200...

What I meant was... With the auto, the engine and trans work together rather than independently as with the 6 sp... Also, that comparison is only good at highway speeds... I get 20-22 mpg combined here in the mountains...

I wanted a 6 sp originally... then I drove the auto and did the research about the mileage...

Bottom line is that I bought the auto, and it gets better mileage...

I bought the manual and have yet to see 20 mpg. I think the best I have gotten is 19mpg.

From what i've read and heard, and for what its worth; I believe that one of the contributing factors to the lesser mileage in the six speed, is due to the fact that the driver has more control I.E has the option to hold the engine rpm's at, say 3000rpm's. The automatic is programmed through the ECU to shift at the optimum rpm's for best mileage.

Doesn't the auto have 3.73 gears in the rear and the manual have 4.10's ? That would be the difference.

So it sounds like either way you are going to get around 18-20 with the v6. Has anyone came out with aftermarket parts like cold air intake or exhaust that will push the mileage up?

And yes if I wanted the best mileage I would buy a 4cyn but I have a thought I would check and see what everyone thought about there trucks and mileage first. I mean I have a $45k F-150 thats gets 17 on the highway at 75, so I am just wanting to make sure if I down size to a smaller truck I am going to INCREASE the mileage not stay the same.

As for the intake or muffler you won't gain anything in MPG. If you do it right you can maybe see .5-1 MPG better. You definitely will see some top end HP w/ the right intake and muffler, but not 10-15 HP like everyone claims. Maybe 5 HP @ the most!

Auto hands down gets better MPG! I have a 6-spd and @ best it got 20 MPG when I took a drive from Los Angeles area to Delta, CO and that was with stock tires and no lift.

Now w/ my 2.5" lift and 31's I get 16.5 @ best around the city. I will be taking a big trip to Colorado again leaving Wed. coming home Sun. and I will post my MPG.

I probably would have gone with the 4 banger, but you can't get a double cab.......double cab wins

I would have preferred a long bed double cab but you can't get a long bed with the 6spd manual.....manual wins

I would have preferred a 5spd to a 6spd, but the 5 spd is only in the 4 banger, so we are back where we started from

On the highway, driving 70, I will get right around 20 mpg. Closer to 80, and I am closer to 17-18 mpg.

Looking at the 2010 Fords its possible your F150 has only a slightly larger engine than the Tacoma V6. And not that much smaller so mileage may not improve a lot.

Check the weight of your truck now, and compare it to the one you are looking to get. Pushing 5000#, no matter which make, is still pushing 5000#. The RC 4 cyl 4x4 5sp with A/C and mats shows an unladen weight of 3545.

^ X2 That's about what I get if I baby the gas pedal. I usually average 17-18. That is about 60% hwy 40% city. Haven't done a full tank on highway yet.

On the interstate at 70 the manual 6th is turning 350 more RPM than auto's 5th.

If you spend most of you time in stop and go or higher interstate speeds, and mpg is a concern, auto may be a better choice.

That said, w/ my 6spd, avg 20 in summer and 17 winter in hilly rural driving. State/county hwys where speeds are 50-65 have no problem geting low 20's on summer trips.

It's not an efficiency issue. The manual transmission is geared different than the auto's transmission (much taller). If I cruise at 2000 rpm, I'm only going about 55-60 mph whereas an auto will be doing closer to 70. At 65, I'm pushing close to 2500. Optimal mileage on our trucks is achieved at 2000 rpm or less.

Fifth Gear Ratio (:1) 1.00
