Again... touch the VSC Off switch to turn on AUTO LSD (also called TRAC OFF MODE):

In AUTO LSD, the VSC is also off to 30 mph.

On 4WD Tacomas, the rear locker only works in L4...

In 2009, TRAC (traction control) and VSC (vehicle stability control) as well as Active Traction Control on 4WD Off Road TRDs was added.

    It was an OPTION

The 2009+ trucks, it's standard equipment.

You have the TRD Sport which has the mechanical LSD.
Search the forum a bit and you'll see the differences between them.

So its either Auto LSD or traction control... ;)
If it has engine regulation then its traction control. So to my knowledge Auto-lsd is not on all the time. There is no truck that I know off that has this ON all the time. All require you to turn on this future because they all use same Bosch system.

I think there is some confusion as to when auto LSD is on. I'm pretty sure is always until you turn it off by pressing the "car skidding" button for five seconds. If you press the button once, quickly, it disables TRAC and VSC but keeps auto LSD engaged. That is why the auto LSD light comes on.

All this trac/auto lsd/a-trac stuff is certainly confusing. trac (always on) compared to Auto LSD (button engaged) is simply increasing the agressiveness of the braking. Like coparing a traditional limited slip (clutch type system) to the GM G80 type rear end. trac will not do a very good job of moving hte vehicle of 1 wheel is on ice/in the air and the other on solid ground. Auto LSD has stronger braking to the spinning wheel and should move the vehicle better in these situations.

All that said, Auto LSD only helps to the extent that one rear wheel has traction. Get them both in the slippery stuff (ice covered road) and it will mostly just decrease your control of the vehicle since a spinning tire gives less traction.

It sure can be confusing - my salesman was way off and the manual didn't quite set me straight.

On my 2WD, the VSC OFF (aka "car skidding") button actually toggles the system between the default VSC mode and AUTO LSD. If you hold the button down a few seconds, it turns them both off. VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) is the everyday, full-time skid control system - AUTO LSD is for slippery conditions and is NOT recommended for normal driving.

... but in low-traction situations, especially where one side may be slipping more, AUTO LSD does seem to help IME.

Also, in the past, with a couple of open diff vehicles, I've managed to get hopelessly stuck with one drive wheel on pavement. (It's pretty embarrassing and it doesn't take much - soft gravel shoulder on a highway or ice by a curb.) If my slow brain gets me into another similar scenario, the AUTO LSD mode should get me out. :D

This may be a dumb question. I read David K's write up but didn't see anything. If I put on the "Auto LSD" I see in his write up I should be stopped, but do I then need to turn it off before driving in normal speeds? Or I read somewhere on here that at certain speeds that light turns off, does that means its off and just re-sets itself? Or does that mean its just off while at speed then comes back on. So long question short here, should I turn it back to normal mode myself before any length of driving or at higher speeds or just leave it, and can I turn it back to normal while moving? TIA.

Even with 4x4 autolsd can have its uses.

If you run off the road and get both right wheels stuck in a plow berm you can spin both rights in the icebank and go nowhere while in 4wd. Put it in 2wd with autolsd enabled and you will have the brakes applied to the right rear wheel and the left rear wheel will turn on pavement...
