Kinda sounds like a 4000+ lb truck versus a sub-3000 lb car problem.

    ...and now I'm out.

The EXACT same thing happened with my 2005. File a NTSB report and complain to Toyota.

No I didn't feel the typical abs pulse. Honestly the stopping distance wasn't an issue until I realized the braking was compromised in some way. It's got new rotors and pads and the fluid looks great. I'll just chose my spots more wisely. Certainly my vw' s set the bar pretty high in terms of handling.

It was a very strange experience I hope not to duplicate again as this time I walked away with a high heart rate and thankfully nothing else.

First time I tried to stop in the snow / ice and my truck felt like it took off I realized the braking left much to be desired in non ideal conditions. As long as you don't let the abs kick in, the brakes are fine.

I find it odd how well the stability control works considering the abs sucks a fat weiner.

    Tacoma's ABS sucks.
    Pull the fuse.

^ Agreed. You said the brakes have been recently changed including the fluid. Tacoma's are a bit fussy when it comes to getting air out of the master cylinder IF any got in there during the fluid change. If you get any air in the master cylinder you have to take it to Toyota for some reason (maybe someone will chip in here with the reason why). You may want to have that checked out by Toyota.

All I've been saying is shifting into neutral is helpful to correct a known problem.

I don't have time to read through every post on here, although I am intrigued because I do have a truck that is affected by this. I'm not here to argue whether it's a real thing or not. I know how to drive in the snow. I've never had an incident in my 20 years being an avid snowboarder and getting myself into the mountains on powder days. This truck is the scariest vehicle I've ever had in a panic braking situation. Does anyone know if there is a reflash that helps? Up until I read the little in this thread, I thought that it was just a thing and there was nothing I could do... I'd love to find a fix for it aside from pulling a fuse. I'm not here to start a war either as much of this thread seems to be. Just looking for info.

I had an interesting moment with my brakes Friday at rush hour. Dry, clear summer day here & nice warm pavement.

Traffic stopped very suddenly and I mashed the pedal hard: full panic mode. Of course I expected the ABS to pump. But I was on some very high traction pavement with good grip, good tires, no passengers, but some small weight secured in the right rear bed area for traction and fun.

It didn't pump 6 times like I expected. That's about what it'd normally do.

Instead the truck just squatted down hard on the suspension and started shedding speed very rapidly, and going arrow straight.

The brakes finally started to lock up and squeal the tires, then the ABS pumped once.

When it released the brakes, that truck popped up off the springs. It hopped straight up and when it came back down the brakes were locked and I slithered to a stop. It never pumped again.

I stayed in my lane, but I didn't stop straight in spite of my countersteeering.

My shocks are shot at 50k miles, and rebound control is quite weak, so when I say the truck "hopped", that sucker hopped hard enough to surprise the hell out of me, after the fact.

(BTW, new Bilstiens are on order. ;) I was gonna wait until the dealer got my recall springs first, but what a mistake that would be!)

I'll find an empty lot and mess around.. Still getting accustomed to the truck.

Was it that the nose dived when you braked hard? Did the brakes lock up and you skid?

Just curious what exactly the behavior was that made you feel uncomfortable if you didn't get a pulsing pedal or were particularly upset with breaking distance.

Three inches of slush on my nice steep concrete driveway this AM, I go out of the garage and the truck just slides right on down towards the sidewalk, ABS thumping.

I popped the autotrans into neutral and came to a stop in about a foot. I know from prior experience on that same driveway if I had stayed in D I would slide all the way down the driveway until I hit the slope of the street and then go about 18 inches INTO the street.

Now this is a '05 Tundra, but it's the same ABS system and I had the same experiences with the 2012 Tacoma. If the NTSB can't fix it, just pop your trucks into neutral be they manual or auto trans. ;)

CDOT said today was only the second time all winter they required chains on passenger cars climbing I-70 to the Divide. 18-24 inches of the heavy wet stuff on the climb, I-70 shut down four times since yesterday morning.

It's 20 c (68 f) here. I am still worried about the effectiveness of my ABS :p .

It's very doubtful it will do you any favors.
