I was originally looking for a ranger :bananadead: but after driving a few with around 50,000 miles, I realized they all ran and basically drive terrible. They were all v6's and they were absolute DOGS!. Not to mention they idled really rough, made a lot of strange sounds, and the interiors were very cheap. After about 6 months of searching I finally upped my budget to 8,000 and my grandpa (used car dealer) found me my truck which I absolutely love. I am sooooo glad I waited for the right one. The quality is great and my truck had 146,000 miles on it when I got it (157,000 now) yet it runs perfect. I hope I can keep it forever.

FYI, my brothers '91 GMC sonoma (my old truck) has 120,000 miles and it has been having some problems lately. (rough idle and hesitation). Good thing I only paid 1300 for it lol.

my moms old 87 runner had well over 250,000 on it when we sold it. I still see it driving around.

A good freind had 3 Tacoma's & 2, 4 Runners no problems. My 1999 TRD had 222,000 miles was the best auto I ever owned. It had the original clutch, rear breaks, all the blubs. I had to replace the MAS two times (it looked like a red blub). Two break jobs, timing belt, just regular maintenance. It got 20.5 MPG combo. Never leaked a drop of anything. Purchased it new 08/15/99 and Toyota warranty purchased back 08/15/08 and gave a crap load of money and cash off a new one. Now im just going to go with the flow and start fixing things my self.

I have had 1/2,3/4 and 1 tons of all makes....Loved them. I got the tacoma after i got rid of my F350 Diesel. I love Diesel but Don't need THAT much power as of right now. The tacoma is super reliable, Great build quality...

    I don't like that i cant lay a sheet of plywood down ( C'MON 46" wheel wells!!)
And the interior is pretty tight (compared to what I am used to)

But my daughter is tiny right now, so she fits, and i have a car hauler, to haul all the materials and supplies to the job site, when i need to.

I do miss the ability to tow a house, and the 8ft bed that i could load to my hearts content.

I will probably go back to a 3/4 ton, in a year or two but for now the taco is great!!

My first car was a 1970 Corolla I bought from my sister for $200, who had bought it from my dad. I drove it for a couple years in high school then sold it at ~170K to a guy who offered me $300 for it...right then I knew Toy resale value rocked! Since then I've had a 1977 FJ straight 6, 1987 4x4 single cab 4 cylinder Toy pickup, 1993 4x4 V6 xtra cab, 1997 V-6 xtra cab T-100, 2000 V8 Tundra, 2002 V6 DC OR, 2005 V6 DC TRD Sport, and now my 2006 V6 DC OR. My buddy calls me a truck slut and I guess he's got a point. :) Each vehicle had its quirks, but all of them were built well, had decent interiors, and stayed tight and smooth-running with only regular maintenance. The 1993 had the crappy 3.0 V6 and needed a new seal (covered under recall). That was the only major work on any of them. Nearly all had good resale value. In between were a Ford Ranger (1983) and a Dodge Dakota DC, among some other cars... 'Nuff said.

My first truck was a nissan king cab...(1979)....and it was a piece of crap! Next was an 81 toyota pickup, 2WD, longbead. Loved it. Then came an 85 4-Runner....then a 91 Toyota extended cab, 4WD, 6 cyl. Loved it.....then a 2000 Taco which ran for 179K until the frame rusted out....and now a 2010 Taco. I have never had serious problems with a Toyota truck!

I flat out didn't want a fullsize, but I was starting to seriously consider an f150.

Chevy/GM - I lucked out on my s10 blazer, but I was getting nervous on it. Build quality and rep are less then steller and I was ovarall unimpressed with their current offerings.

Ford - Had a ranger back in the mid 90's, it was an ok truck, but it also wans't anything special. the new rangers aren't much differnt and i just could not get excited. The f150 on the other hand, is a pretty decent truck and my dad is a lifelong ford guy. I really didn't want a fullsize, both for size and for cost but it was starting to get tempting due to actually trying to buy a toyota.

Dodge- I don't like dodges, I knwo too many people who have had too much major trouble with them so I never even seriously considered one.

    I have owned:

    1956 Chevrolet pickup
    1971 Datsun pickup
    1971 Blazer 4x4
    1978 F-150 4x4
    1982 Isuzu diesel P’uP
    1983 Ford Ranger 4 cyl
    1970 F-100 4x4
    1980 F-150 2wd
    1983 Dodge Mitsubishi 4x4
    1993 Dakota 2wd
1995 F-150 4x4 (one of my favorite trucks, 240k miles)
    1996 Lexus LX450 AWD
2005 Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 (Major POS!) Auto tranny died at 80k miles
    2002 PreRunner 2.7 (147k miles)

I really liked the PreRunner, but it was going to need some work, and I wanted a double cab and 4x4, so it was time to get something else. Drove a new Tacoma DC and decided I wanted one.

My wife suggested I try a Ford, as I had owned so many, and the Tacoma seemed expensive. She owned a 1995 Toyo 4x4 when we started dating, BTW.

I went to the local Ford dealer and he offered me 3k trade-in on the PreRunner, wanted $37,000 for a F-150 4x4, and generally pissed me off when he kept pushing me to “sign now”, and didn’t want to return my PreRunner keys. I left there and never went back. BTW, to get a manual tranny, you have to buy a F-250, too much truck for my needs.

On December 23, I picked up my new 2009 Tacoma DC 4x4 OR 6 speed and am very pleased with it.

I’ll never own another Dodge or GM product. I might consider a Ford, but not likely. Wife wants a Sequoia, and she’ll either get that or a Lexus.

Did I say I love my new Tacoma?

under 20k for 4x4 and you get over 20mpg average....i think that's the best mpg for any 4wd truck made...and it looks better than any truck out there and lasts longer than any truck out there...only other truck i would consider is a nissan frontier...they are pretty reliable too...but the frontier doesn't have a 4cyl 4x4 anymore...so you would pay more and get less mpg for the v6...i guess you could get a ford ranger for less but look what you get ....lmao...it's ugly and doesn't last

oh by the way...my '88 toyo tacoma lasted well over 300k miles...it did eventually start burning a little oil and leaking a drop here or there but still ran like it was brand new...i sold it for $1000 cuz at the time i didn't have the money to put into it to fix it up since i was still in college....i think the guy still drives it around...lol...and if you really need an answer go watch the top gear video of the toyota truck

I never owned a Toyota before but I really liked the 1st gereration Tacoma's. Then when the second generation came out, I fell in love with them and I knew I had to buy one!! That and it was time for a new vehicle anyways!! This Tacoma I have now is the first vehicle I have ever bought.:D I cant be happier with it and I never had a regret on buying one!! Cant wait until the 3rd generations come out!!!

I bought a 99 fully loaded extended cab sr5 brandy new. Toyota bought it back from me in the summer of 08 with almost 500,000 miles on it. Still had the original auto tranny and 3.4l. No major work except all new brakes i.e, master cylinder, lines, calipers & rotors.

    I LOVED that truck!

Plus, Toyota has never done me wrong.

My first truck was a Nissan back in the early 90s...wasn't too bad until someone smashed into me and totaled it. Then I owned 2 GMCs...both were always a pain for some reason, traded in a 2005 GMC Canyon for my Tacoma a few weeks ago. The GMC had 65k miles on it but was burning oil big time whenever it sat for a few hours and you started it you got a huge puff of smoke. Was ecstatic to get rid of the GMC and bought the Tacoma. Have always heard very good things about Toyota's and have friends that drive them and are very happy. In fact my wife recently got a new Highlander, nice car as well.

Overlooking it's stellar reliability record, it's resale value decimates every other truck on the market. Period.
