My package just arrived so hopefully I'll do it next free weekend.

I called my dealer out of curiosity- they charge $220 for a drain/fill and don't offer a full flush service. Are you sure yours was a full flush?

I flushed mine this afternoon using the above method for adding the new fluid. Everything went great. Thanks Mountain Lion, Fortech and acrossawire!

Flushed mine last week, went fairly well. Thanks again for the pictures and tech data included in the first post, big help.

I installed a OEM Trans cooler in series with my radiator cooler before I started, I let the flushed fluid flush out the cooler.

Draining and refilling were easy enough, I ran into trouble getting into "temp mode" to check the level. I also had trouble filling the damn thing at all with a funnel and length of hose. Got it close and let the dealer set the fluid level.

While I was under the car I noticed a drip from the rear of the transmission. Having a Gulf States Toyota extended warranty I called the dealer for an appointment to check it out (and set the ATF level). They called me back with a transmission leak, timing cover leak, and a power steering rack leak all for around $2,500!!

Took Fred Haas two days and $400 out of my pocket for a new water pump (parts only), new fluids, and alignment. Finally got my money out of that extended warranty!

Just a thought... instead of stopping/ starting you could have another container full of new fluid pumping into the other line as drains through the 1st. Just keep adding oil until fresh-ish stuff comes out. Anyone tried it like this?

I think this has been covered. If I recall there is a reason it can't be done, not a pressure line or location of the pump?

I figure it may be push only via the pump... and may not pull into the trans. Kinda redundant

Great write up! This saved me a lot of time. I also went with Amsoil ATF. My truck is driving noticeably better/smoother.

    Thanks again!

Did mine over a year ago; transmission shifts perfectly under all temperatures and conditions.

    Used Toyota WS fluid.

I just grabbed a case of 12-1 quart bottles of Toyota WS on eBay for $80 shipped and want to do this soon. Should I be worried about trying to do this in the winter months? It's supposed to be a little warmer than 40 deg F this Saturday, which is when i want to do it...

Also, I'm at 101k and the trans fluid has never been touched. I've seen some people say that it's not good to do a full flush and fill at this high a mileage. Recommendations? I could do a drain/fill now (~3 qts) then do it again once/month for the next few months?

Cut & broke off some stuff.

Did a drain/fill on mine a year ago at 115k. Drained out ~2.5 qt. Put in ~3.5 qt.
I plan to do another this month maybe which will be around 135k miles.

I'm thinking a few qt worth of fresh fluid mixed in is good enough. And a simple gravity drain like that shouldn't dislodge any chunks big enough to cause problems the way a true forced "flush" might.

40 degree should not be a problem but if it was me I'd wait till warmer days just because I don't like working in the freezing cold.

That's a great price for Toyota WS.

I did a total flush at about 100k. Works perfect. Don't listen to the ignorant people. Fresh ATF is always better than old no matter how many miles you have on.

How'd your guys' ATF look/smell at 100+k? Definitely make you glad you changed it?

I'm leaning toward the drain/fill since its slightly less involved and I'm not terribly comfortable with tranny fluid yet so it'd be a good entry to it. I guess the drain/fill is basically the first part of a flush, so I could check the fluid and determine then whether to continue with the full flush?

I didn't think mine seemed dark.

I'd say start with basic drain/fill and if you think the fluid looks too dark, keep going. If it looks ok, leave it at that.
