If mpg was the main concern, then I probably wouldn't have this truck. Toyota trucks are not exactly leaders in the mpg race. I bought it because I've had 3 previous trucks and they've been nothing but reliable & comfortable. Would I like to get better mileage? Hell yeah! But it's not a deal breaker. Just my $.02

lol, its 4 wheel drive, not too many hills but I climb about 600ft in elevation everyday to work. I still dont understand the 16 on flat ground on the highway..maybe I need a 7th gear.

And you should drop that 600ft coming home every day so that should be close enough to a wash. Dunno...

Someone please borrow my truck. Too lazy. All I know is that the gas stations take my card every time.

But seriously. I guess I should know MPG for on-road, MPG for off-road high and MPG for off-road low. Right now I take extra fuel on most every ride. I like reserve to mean 5-10 gallons! ;)

08 Access cab prerunner. I do probably 75% stop and go driving to work, very little extended highway miles. Seems like I get around 19 mpg. I dont keep exact records but when I fill up I'm usually real close to 20 mpg. Of course I drive like a huge wuss now a days so that helps.

My 2005 DC 4WD got 16 mpg around town and 18-19 mpg hwy.

My new 2010 DC 4WD is still not 'broken in' fully, I suspect: 15 mpg around town, 16-18 mpg hwy.

I just took a trip to flag from phoenix, one tank of gas 300 miles on it :( I know it was mostly due to elevation change. I soaked up 2/3 of a tank to get up there 75 on "flat" cc and 65 4th gear cc uphill. Then 1/3 tank on the way back at 75-85 cc. I got a 4 banger with lift and larger tires (not regeared) so idk whether to be happy or sda about it.

Over the last 20 fill ups I'm averaging 21.1 mpg. EPA sticker says 17 city, 22 hwy, so I'm pretty happy. On a recent highway trip I went over 23 mpg. When we had a big snow storm followed by very cold temps, I dropped to 18.5 mpg (lots of 4x4 use and engine warming). Not too bad.:)

I'm actually very happy with my mileage considering the performance I get from the 4.0. It's a big V6 in a Double Cab 4x4. I'm also not buying that a 1/2 ton V8 gets better mileage because all the ones I've driven simply don't. Based on my experience, they are at least 2-3 MPG worse in all situations.

You also have to expect that your mileage will drop in winter, when using 4x4 and when running at higher speeds. It's actually amazing how much of a difference there is between running at 55 and even 60. Once you get up past that, it's like a tap opening up. It's just the nature of the beast. Highway mileage stats aren't based on running 75-85.

For the 100th time, winter fuel blends affect mileage less than 3%. It's the ambient temperature, cold starts, and # of cold starts that screws mileage.
That being said, I was down to a low of a steady 12 MPG today bucking a wind, cold start, sled in the box goin 75......Wonderful. Warm, the truck would get around 14 mpg about 15 minutes later.... I average around 16 mpg @-25, @70 mph.
But if I don't like it, what can I do? Nothin'.....(Slowing down sucks, and so do other midsizers)

I'm getting 15 mpg in mostly city driving. Considering the Winter gasoline, unusually cold temps and my short trips to and from work I doubt it could to get much better than that, especially with this tall blunt nosed open bed 4x4 pickup with it's big unbroken in gas V6.

I also don't buy it. I had a Chevy Silverado ext cab 5.3 liter V8 with the Advanced Fuel Management system that supposedly cuts off half the cylinders under light hwy loads. It got 12 mpg under the same type of driving as my current Tacoma and that was with Summer gasoline. I have a friend and a co-worker who own full size F250 a F150s respectively. They thought their trucks got better gas mileage than they actually did. They were shocked by the actual mileage after I showed them how to calculate it.

Almost every single person I have heard quoting full size truck mileage #s. Is basically repeating what the window sticker says, or is giving the highest # their mileage readout has ever shown, or can't do math. #s from our fleet indicate that fullsize trucks under similar conditions will not get as good mileage as a midsize. Unfortunatly, the Tacoma is not a whole lot better, but not worse. The next gen Tacoma will be a different story, however.
You cannot compare a high clearance 4X4 with some crappy 2WD with low rolling resistance tires.....
