So I'm driving into work on the highway behind a guy in a Ford Ranger with one of those shells on the back that has a half swing window above the tail gate. In the bed he has a cement mixer with the tail gate down and the window up in the air just flying around loose. He hits a bump on the highway, the window comes down, smashes the cement mixer, breaks into hundreds of pieces. I'm about 4 car lengths behind him doing 80mph. Glass flies everywhere, I end up with about 5 star like chips in my windshield, about another 25 little dings, and about 15 scratches in the paint on the hood and grill from all the glass hitting me.

Needless to say it was pretty insane but surprisingly I'm not that pissed for some reason.

Hhhmm, 4 car lengths at 80 mph....less than one second following distance. What, were you trying to figure out the brand name on the mixer?

Call me silly, but when I see an unsecure load, I get around it or way back of it.

You are a better person than me. I would have ran him off the road or at least called the police for a dumb a** driver on the road.

I would have at least got his license plate down and shot a pic with my phone. He is now on the road to do it again to another person, maybe next time the mixer will fall out and kill the next poor sap stupid enough to drive behind him like that.

I would have to stop the guy to show him how stupid he was, he's probably going to do the same thing again to some other person.

I had no damage to mine, but this is what my wife and I came out to after lunch on Sunday. What made it worse is that the lady who parked it like that came out of the restaurant, apologized, then moved her car back a couple of feet. After moving, she missed PARK and put the Lincoln in NEUTRAL, then it promptly rolled into my truck again.

A chunk of ice flew off a Lexus dealership box truck right after that northeast blizzard a couple weeks back and smashed into my windshield leaving an 8-10" crack. I am actually shocked the whole thing didn't shatter. I lost him at a light which is probably a good thing because, with my wife and child in the truck, I really don't know how well that would've gone. However, they are paying for it even though we have no deductible glass coverage in this state. No reason my insurance should pay for their negligence. FYI: There is a NJ law (it happened there) about cleaning off your vehicle of ice and snow.

Moral of the story: This dude is nuts for not doing something about it.

Yea yea, I guess since my windshield already has about 6 feet of cracks in it I don't really care. Here in Colorado, there is so much crap on the roads, add that with the fact that I drive up in the mountains every weekend (200+miles every week) and you basically have to buy a new windshield every spring.

Yes, I would have definitely stopped him or taken his license plate number. You don't know the extent of the damage until you take the time to look closely.

Anyway, if you do need to claim this with insurance, try to get it covered under your "comprehensive coverage". This does not typically raise your insurance premiums. Weather damage and hitting animals is covered under comp. They'll try to put it under collision because you did technically collide with something that caused damage. But the key is that it was out of your control (like an animal running across the street). If it's out of your control, it is comprehensive and does not affect your rates.
