what are these tiny filters used for under the hood? do they do anything?

a breather for what?

 

Thats not a stock breather. Looks like someone added it on. I think that breather should go to the intake tube, or possibly PCV. I gotta look under my hood to be sure. Do you have a CAI on there?

 

i have a intake. i was watching intake videos on youtube and saw someone with a small filter like this. the hose looks like the one i connected to the intake tube so i was wonder why ppl do this

 

Theres really no reason to add these filters, the PCV system is designed for a closed crankcase. I'm not sure about Taco's but on my mustang removing the vent tube that goes to the air intake actually causes a vacuum leak, thats also a closed crankcase design.

 

That hose looks like its going into the valve cover. So, it looks like someone replaced a PCV valve with that goofy looking mini filter. It doesn't do anything but provide ventilation for the crankcase and keep oil vapor from leaking all over the engine.

Someone mentioned that it might be PCV...if you do not have a functioning PCV system, then you should shorten your oil change interval by a LOT. The oil will load up with blowby fuel and water vapor quickly if the crankcase vapors are not actively removed by the PCV system.

 

Besides what was said above, the pcv also keeps your gaskets from blowing out from crankcase pressure. If the pcv is missing put one back on, these motors aren't like the 80's where you rip that stuff off and not worry.

 

IT looks like a K&N key cahin? Probably don't belong there.
