Brighter Reverse lights

I have been looking on all the Tacoma forums I could find since I bought my truck in late December. I saw a way to modify some lights (possibly some sort of headlight) to fit where the reverse lights go. I cannot find the website were I saw it. I live in a neighborhood w/o streetlights and my windows are tinted. Need more light to prevent hitting another car/person/animal/hard object. Help please!

 

Back up lights, 7-pin back up light, foglight bulb in the reverse light socket, roll your windows down, or get lighter tint.

 

go to tractor supply get 2 tractor off-road lights and wire them into your reverse wire

If you get 886 fog light bulbs from autozone or wherever and use a dremel to cut off the end to where you just have the two wires showing, that will give out more light. It takes about 20 mins to do them both.

Any risk melting the housing due to the increased wattage? I guess since they're backup lights, they're not on for very long.

 

I have really dark tint and i did PIAA fog lights mounted under the rear bumper witha reverse camera. They are really bright and every once in a while i roll the windows down but the camera works well.

 

I did this mod about 8 months ago and have had no serious problems.

When cutting the wire leads on the bulb I used wire cutters and the bulb broke. So next I used a dremel with cut-off wheel and it worked perfectly. The other problem I had was that one bulb popped out of the plug after driving for a few days. So, I squeezed the contacts closer and put the bulb back in and it has been fine ever since.

 

I did this about a week ago. No problems yet. Will let you know if something ugly happens.

 

I did this too, but with a minor twist. I selected a Sylvania 889 lamp. That's 27 watts, vs. 18 for the factory bulb and 50 for the 886. I felt the 889 would provide a compromise between additional light and possibility of problems due to excess current and heat.

I used a metal cutting blade on a reciprocating saw to slice along the back side of the mounting flange (e.g. opposite the surface with the gasket) and it released the bulb in about 3 seconds. Using a hacksaw would probably take under a minute.

I tried to capture the results against my light colored garage door. I noticed that the shadow thrown by the lights made the difference more evident than the light itself. You can see the results below. Only the left bulb was replaced, the right one - left in the picture facing the rear of the truck - is still the factory bulb.



The shadow thrown by the factory bulb is barely visible while the factory bulb barely lights the shadow thrown by the 889 bulb.

 

Bought some nice rectangle 55w lights from Northern Tool for 12 bucks/pair. Bought an 8 dollar relay, tapped into the power source and reverse lights from the tow package. Mounted the lights on each side of the hitch with the hardware included so that they are up underneath the rear bumper and at an angle. I love them because they are really bright and not even visible (when not in use) when looking at the back of the truck. Just did this mod last week.

 

I was thinking of doing the same thing but putting them like on either side of the license plate, provided it does not block it at all. I do a lot of off roading and the chances that i would break one off under my bumper are pretty high.

 

No not really. How long do you stay in reverse? I'm never in reverse for that long so I don't really worry about it

 

Well they could be on for a while at times. I know that when we go hunting if it is dark by the time we are ready to head out or we have to drag a deer out, we will just turn on the ignition throw it in reverse and set the ebrake, then turn the ignition off just so we have the extra light.
