Can a stone or something get lodged between the disc and the pad? Funny noise.

Was driving home today and got this screeching sound that came from the right front wheel. The only sound I can compare it to is like I was dragging a wire coat hanger or something. Pulled over and checked after about 50 ft. Saw nothing wrong. Drove another 20 ft and it still did it. I hit the brakes a few times, and the sound went away. It was pretty loud. The truck only has 13k.

I drove it about 40 miles and it hasn't happened again. Is there any way a stone or something could have been caught in there? Maybe between the disc and the dust shield? (If there is a dust shield.) Any thoughts?

 

its very possible a small stone got lodged in there til it kicked back out.

 

If a stone made that kind of sound, you'll see a nasty witness mark on your disk. That being said, maybe something was rubbing on the disk, but there is no clearance between it and the pad.

 

ive had it happen..Stones can get stuck between the pad and disk. Best bet would be to pull the wheel off and check for peace of mind.

 

Right after I got my leveling kit put on I heard a noise coming from the front end somewhere, sounded like i was dragging something that came loose on the suspension somewhere. Got out and looked and found nothing. Had my wife slowly drive while I walked along. It then sounded like something loose inside the wheel. Come to find out a rock got stuck INSIDE the wheel drum. Had to take the wheel off, brake caliper off and drum to get it out. How it got in there I have no idea!

 

Yes, I used to work at a Subaru dealership and chronic problem on the Outbacks and legacys. Stones would get stuck in the brake caliper. At slow speeds its a really high pitch sequel. Fix was to remove wheel and brake caliper and stone would fall out.

 

90% of the time if you stop and drive in reverse for a few feet while turning your wheels left to right it'll fall right out.

 

Or driving in reverse and using your brakes....should dislodge it also.

 

yeah ive seen this before. my sis had a brand new honda civic with 200 miles on it she hit a stick and a piece managed to lodge itself between the pad and rotor. not only was it a loud noise you could smell it burn...scared the shit out of her

 

I guess anything is possible but how likely is this to happen?

 

I bent the dust shield on the inside of the front wheels and was rubbing on the rotor. Sounded like something was stuck in there. Just bent it back and there was no problems. The dust shield is kinda like tin, bends very easily.

 

More often than not the pebble gets lodged between the dust shield and the rotor - not much clearance between the pad and rotor for anything, maybe a particle of dust or some mud.

I drive allot of dirt roads and usually have it happen several times a week. Backing up a few feet will clear it out 90% of the time. The other 10%, it will usually wear itself out within a couple of miles if you can tolerate the noise. Never ever had one damage the rotor in the dozens/hundreds of times this has happened, not even a scratch.
