My bed is loose.

I was checking around the back of the truck to find out the noise. I find out that a bolt of the bed is loose, the first bolt of the right side nearest to the cab is loose. I could lift the bed about 1/8'' of inch. Short bed

I think that is not normal, that is the first time that I see that on a pick-up truck.

What could cause that, overweight or not to torque spec?

I'm planing to take it back to the dealer and tell them to get all new bolts and washer for the bed.

 

Probably just not torqued properly of nothing looks stripped/damaged. Did you try tightening it back down? IIRC it is a T55.

 

I'd give it a shot of lock-tite and torque it back down but I live an hour away from the dealer and going in for that is a major PITA.

Hey, look at it as an excuse to put on extra D-rings!

It is a T55 bolt....

 

Dunno what would cause the bolt to come loose like that. If it's just one bolt, why not just tighten it back down? Torx 55 bit is correct. I want to say 90 ft /lbs torque for bed bolts...

 

When I did the D-ring mod I just torqued the shit out of them for about 30 impacts each when putting em back in. Your guess is as good as mine as to what that equates to in ft. lbs., but they've stayed good and well put since then.

 

Put some loctite on it and tighten it down. Good to go.

 

Why would you do that when the only thing that needs to be done is to tighten the bolt?

 

My 2005 bed bolt also came loose enough to cause a rattle when hitting bumps. My son had the special socket in his tool set and torqued it back up! Only the one, and only that one time...

 

You know,I'm really glad I saw this post. I've had a ratttle on the right side that I thought was in the back door on my 08 access cab. I took the truck to the dealer for the rear spring TSB and asked them to check the noise out. They said they couldn't fine the noise. You hit the nail on the head. A loose bed bolt on the right front side. Thanks a bunch!!!!!

 

weird, my 05 had that same bolt loose when I put on my D-rings

 

Done loctite and D-rings.

 

Try taking home lighter women. Seems to help.

 

Cool! After reading this post, I figured out why I heard a rattle when driving with an empty bed . First bed bolt on pass side was loose. Obviously , a lot of others have same issue. Mine is also a 2009 .

 

what great information, have only owned my 2009 Taco Double a week and have put 1000+ kms on it already and have been looking everywhere for the every bump rattle. After reading this thread I tried lifting the front PS of box, no problem, easy 1/4" of play. That explains why it sounds like it is coming from behind the rear seat, and with the seat down and completely empty back there it is very noticeable.

Had a rear end clunk that sound like the tailgate was only partially closed over small bumps. Noticed I could grab the bed from behind the passenger door and actually jiggle it up and down a 1/8th inch to reproduce the sound perfectly. Got about a 1/2-3/4 of a turn out of the front most passenger side bed bolt and noise gone. Tightened it real good with a 1/2" drive T55 and a small breaker bar.

 

I had the identical problem in the identical place... Front most passenger side bed bolt.

Don't know if it was from wear or what, but turned out that the spacer was too long.

I've got the same problem! First I took it back to the dealer and they said to take it back to the shop that sold me the camper shell. They wouldnt even look at the problem. So I had to fix it myself. Bolt was tight but bed was lose. Just the one bolt behind passenger side by the cab. I first ground down that metal spacer flush with the bed. Reinstalled the bolt with Locetite. Good To Go! A few months latter the beds lose again. This time I stuck a big washer between the bed and frame. Good To Go!
Well it's lose again! The composite bed is wearing down around the washer making things come lose. Could it be that the frame mount is getting hot and weaking the composite material? That mount is located right over the exhaust muffler.
Anybody know whats up?

 

Vibrations.

I would use a small bushing / rubber washer between the frame and bed to absorb the vibrations causing wear.

 

I had a knock coming from my bed for a while now. I always just thought it was my sleeping platform bouncing around. I've removed my sleeping platform and have been driving around without it for the last few weeks and sure enough the knock is still there. I did a tire rotation today and also added grip tape to the top of my sliders. I decided to investigate the knock further while working on my truck. Turns out the front passenger side bed bolt is loose. I can move the bed up and down about an 1/8". I guess this is a somewhat common problem. I tried tightening the torx bolt and it was tight and wouldn't budge. I also tried tightening the nut from underneath with a breaker bar and also hitting it with my impact gun. Didn't budge either. Going to have to take it to the dealer to let them deal with it.
