OEM Oil plug gasket stuck?

Ok guys so I'm in the process of changing my oil in my new truck and forgot to get some new gaskets for the drain plug. When I took the bolt out the plug came out but the gasket is still stuck to the oil pan. Since I don't have any and it's a Saturday what do you guys recommend I do now? I thought about picking it off there but I didn't know if it would rip or not. Maybe Fire will see this thread and have a couple spare gaskets since he's nearby.

I wouldn't worry bout re-using it for just this one time. Just check for leaks periodically, and put a new gasket on at your next oil change.

Mine didn't even have a gasket from the factory!

 

Should I attempt to remove it from the oil pan itself though since I don't have any extras? I'm going to a dinner today for my sister's b-day and the drive is an hour away. I just don't want to run into any problems with that kind of a drive and my 3 month old in the backseat.

 

If it's stuck on there pretty good, I wouldn't mess with it. It will hold the seal on the pan side, so then all you have to worry about is on the drain plug side. If you remove it an re-use it, then you need to worry about sealing on both sides of the washer.

Have you gotten the factory filter off yet? That's a whole other adventure.

 

It's definitely stuck on there good. I tried to get it to come off with my thumbnail and it wouldn't budge. I'm assuming since this is the first oil change on the truck (new truck) that the paint is what has sealed it up to the pan itself.

 

I think you will be fine. I have something like 6 changes on my current gasket with no leaks (not recommended). As long as you don't have a quick lube place service your truck and mangle the thing, it does not deform that much.

 

I had to take a razor blade to mine and carefully work it off. I don't see why leaving it on there would be a problem. My situation was different though, I replaced the plug with a Fumoto valve and a new gasket so I did not care about destroying the old gasket.

 

Then I'd just put the plug back in and not worry about it. Worst case scenario you will have a tiny leak, nothing that would make any difference for weeks.

I'm sure there are folks here that would say you don't ever need to replace the crush washer . There used to be debates about that all over the subaru forums I was on.

 

I'm glad I'm not the first one to have this problem. I was starting to feel like a moron there at first when it happened. I'm going to just leave it on there and get some from the Toyota dealership and replace it when I do my next oil change. Like previously stated I shouldn't have to worry about the pan side leaking I'll just have to check the plug side really good when I crank er' up.

 

Mine did that...I knocked it off, and part of the rubber coating tore a bit.

I had to reuse it...no leak, thankfully, so I will just have to remember to pick up a few for the next oil change.

 

I have used the same gasket through ten oil changes and not one drop has leaked. No seepage either.

 

I change mine every other change. You should be fine.

 

I have to take a screwdriver to knock mine off. You could knock it off and clean it up but either way you will be fine using is again.

 

It's ok to reuse this time but next time change it.

To get it off just get a big flat head screw driver and chip/pry it off. should take 2 seconds

 

I've never changed mine dont worry about it. When I buy a filter from toyota I tell the guy I don't need the gasket.

 

When I purchase my filters from the dealer the parts guy always throws a new washer in each filter box. No extra charge for that. Filters cost only (2) for $10 bucks.

 

haha...no kidding...i spent the better part of the afternoon getting mine
off the first time...it's probably put on by robot at the factory.
I should post a pix or two of the tool i had to invent.

yea, i didnt notice a gasket either on my drain plug?...
but i've not noted any leaks without one.

just need to check it every now and then.

I've never changed mine, probably never will. Honestly, you don't even need a crush washer there it's just Toyota being paranoid. I've never, ever changed one of those out on any car I've had, and never had a leak.

 

An S2000 and a Miata take a new aluminum washer every time and if you don't it will leak. I know 1st hand on both of those cars since my wife has had both. I can flip the used washer on the S2000 and get two oil changes out of it. My '02 Tacoma only had a new washer once in 125,000 miles and it never leaked. My '10 Tacoma washer was stuck on the 1st oil change. I whacked it with a flat head screwdriver and it popped right off.
