Short Vs Long Bed for offroad

Hi, I am torn between the double cab, long bed vs short, mainly the \factor holding me back from the long bed about the offroading part is the longer wheelbase and the fact you cant get the TRD offroad in the LB. I live in Colorado lots or small narrow rocky trails, I never hit any trails to gnarly but will definetly put the truck to use offroad camping, fishing, and just cruising the mountains. I tried searching the forums but all the topics dont really go into detail into the 4x4 aspect. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

 

Well as stated the shorter the wheelbase the better for offroad, easier to turn, better traction in mud with the contact of power closer together... If you really dont need the extra length go for the shortbed trd offroad...

 

Short FTW, buddy of mine bought a LB, but started to wheel and now is looking for the SB with a locker. If you do mostly street and need the longer be and extra cabin room than go for the LB. I was undecided before I got my DC SB with TRD Off road, I first wanted a AC, then DC LB and ended up DC SB because I wanted to off road and figure if I really needed to carry a lot of stuff I can just rent a bigger truck or just tow. For my need the SB was perfect. as long as I can carry my dog back there I am good. Good luck with your choice, and choose one that fits your life style.

 

Long bed! I love that I can load up my truck when going camping...trust me...go with the long bed, you can not fit that much camping equipment wood, bicycles, furniture, or 25 bags of mulch for the wife . lol...
Besides the wight in the back of the (long bed) will help with the off-road either way....my 2 cents

If your into any serious off-roading you better go for the short bed. I have a long bed and unless you are looking at a significant lift theres a lot of extra tail hanging out there to get stuck on something. Just my thoughts. Ken

Where are you in CO?

I live south of Divide, CO at around 9500 feet.

I'm glad I went with the DC TRD OR 4x4... I've been on trails you couldn't bring the longbed especially w/o the locker or A-TRAC...

I have the bed extender for when I need the space of the longbed...

I was concerned about the SB, and almost bought an AC TRD OR (which has the same bed length as the longbed, but same wheelbase of the DC SB), but honestly, I've had my truck for almost a year, and the shortbed has never been an issue... AND, I came from a Dodge 2500 QC LB diesel...

I am about to buy the DC LB and I was really torn between the long and short bed for the same reasons. I live in CO as well. The reason is that if you are just light offroading you will be fine with the long bed. I like to get out to places in the south platte and around moab and go climbing and it will be just fine. If you want to go rock crawling or mudding get the short bed. I want to sleep in the back of the truck and have more room for stuff. I have had a SR5 01 access cab 4 cyl 4WD and did some offroading that I never thought possible without a locker.

 

Short bed for wheeling in CO some of the trails get very tight. Or get the AC long bed TRD OR thats what I have. The locker is priceless on some of the CO trails. I cant speak for the Atrac because I dont have it nor have I ever needed anything other than the locker. I dont even go in 4wd till I get stuck.

 

I haven't properly wheeled the truck, but I have had it on some of the nastiest "roads" available in the mountains. The center of the frame is a constant worry under these conditions. The breakover angle is worth paying attention to in the brochures.

I dont mean to get off subject here but I've heard that once you get stuck you cant engage the 4x4. Something about having to be moving to do so... is that not really correct?

Access Cab for the win...

Shorter wheelbase, full size bed, and an excuse to never have to drive your friends around town.

1 Why the heck did you revive a 7 year old thread

2 Your video is completely irrelevant, a DCSB/AC, mod for mod, will always be more capable than a DCLB. A regular cab crushes them all, I wish they still made it. Shorter truck with the exact setup in the video would outwheel the DCLB all day.
