Check engine fault light

    I own a 2009 Tacoma Auto. 5000 miles. A month ago I got an error code DTC
    P0705 (transmission range sensor circuit malfunction PRNDL input) My mechanic advised me to replace part#
    $138 84540-04010 Neutral Switch Assembly
    84540-04010 SWITCH ASSY. NEUTRAL START. I did.
    However a one week later the check engine light came back. My mechanic does not know what to do besides clearing the code which simple returns. I live on the island of Grenada where there are no Tacoma dealers. MY vehicle was imported from the US. HELP anyone. Islandride

    Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    You may have a bad connection in the harness. The code specifies that the switch is sending two positions to the ECM at the same time. Check your connections in the plug, follow the harness back to the ECU and check the ECU for a loose connection. Also, look for a bad/loose ground.

    Hi 98TACOMA 27 I followed your advice. But my local mechanic could not solve the problem. I have been told that I would have to replace the harness. That is at a cost of $1800.00. What are my options and is there any danger in using the vehicle with the check engine light on?

    According to the PDF for the code, it is only telling the ECM if you are in P or N so the truck can be started. I don't see any other reason for the switch at this time, other than activating the R lights also. I don't see where it would hurt running like this unless down the road it wouldn't allow you to start the truck or the reverse lights failing to illuminate. This is based solely on the PDF though.
