Rear brake drum weight is missing

Rear brake drum weight is missing. Is this something to get fixed? One dealer said forget about it and another said same thing won't cover it. 20,000 miles. Any ideas? Thanks.

 

Are you getting any vibrations?

If no...then I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on your brake shoes & such in case they're wearing funny or the drum gets warped.

 

its a weight to balance the drum,kinda like a weight to balance the tires,probably want notice it.

 

If it does give you the shakes there are some shops that will balance with the wheel on the truck... the only downside is you have to re-balance when you change/rotate/"take-off-and-put-back-on-and-forget-which-way-it-goes-on"...

 

That's weird. We make drum brakes (and calipers) where I work and I have never heard of using weights on a drum. Not saying it isn't done, but we don't.

 

Same as when you grind off to balance. Also these 'attachments' are sometimes used to minimize some frequencies - I used to 'ring' discs for GM to attempt to find designs/materials that would minimize squealing in the human ear freq's.

 

Thanks everybody. The water pump just went but every tacoma I had the water pump failed early. Had painted the drums last summer. Just noticed the weight gone washing the car and with the toyota crap going got nuts. I'll just "fogetabotit" as the say in saprano land. Thanks for the help!

 

Thread revival. I have also lost the weights on the brake drum and have noticed the rear tires have cupped over the last 5,000 miles. I know that can be caused by the wheel being out of balance, can the drum being out of balance cause this cupping? I'm getting new tires so if it makes sense to replace the drums to avoid cupping, I'll do it.

 

Bump, could a missing weight on the drum cause the wheel assembly to be enough out of balance to cause cupping on the tires?
