Question shock bolt spinning???

its been about a month since i had my lift out on.I went out and check the top bolts on the rear shock, and when i put a wrench on it to tighten the whole axle spun with the bolt, is this normal?

The top of the shock shaft is made to fit a 5mm hex wrench to hold it still.....I have a pic on here somewhere....

sorry to thread jack, but it's a similar question. the trd shocks are the same way, i found that out, but then i was trying to actually get the nut off, i ran out of place to grab on top to keep the shaft from spinning. i ended up wrapping up part of an old rubber bycicle tube around the highest point i could reach on the shaft and grabbing that with a set of pliers...that way it didn't scrape or gouge the shock shaft....is there a better way to get the nut off?

Hold the shaft with the hex key then tighten the nut. I believe the torque is 20 Nm.

on the 5100 is the shat of the axle the same,like on the 5100 do you put a allen wrench on the top.

The shaft is supposed to spin freely, if that is what the question above was really asking by referring to "tight".

That chrome shaft is attached to the piston/valves inside of the shock barrel that moves up and down inside the barrel containing oil and gas under pressure. It is what dampens the vehicles movement over rough terrain.

It's hard to tell exactly what he is referring to as loose. The shaft will still turn with the nut as he describes even if the nut is torqued to spec, this is what I thought he was asking about - but could be wrong.

Yeah...Thats normal. Thats why you have to hold the shaft with a 5mm Hex

You will see a hole in the top of the shaft. A 5mm hex fits inside it. Then use an open wrench to tighten the nut.

I thought it would better to post in this then start up another, but what would one do with a 5100 and no hex bolt spot up top with the bolt maxed out and spinning. Pic included to limit confusion. Tried channel locks around the boot and around a rubber grip but no luck.

On 5100 shocks the top of the shaft has a flat spot to hold with a wrench.
