It was a receiver hook actually that broke off. Solid steel.

 

I highly doubt the frame got tweaked... most of the energy would be transferred through teh frame but it's all a forward motion... which is pretty much the strongest way to get hit. I'd still have it checked out though, and if anything's out of wack make sure his/her insurance pays for it in full. Sucks man, glad it seems you're ok (+1 get it checked anyway though)

My girlfriend got hit and she thought she was fine and then ~2 months later, she started getting bad neck pains. I would get it looked at just in case.

the bumper is held on by a couple of bolts

the hitch is held on by a couple of more bolts

a tailgate is held on by a whole lot of nothing

could all be done in a couple of hours and you could have beer money for the semester.

 

Well I didn't get a check. I got an estimate and it's being fixed. That's all I need.

 

id say No dont fix yourself. I got hit in the rear and they did less damage than you have.. and it turns out when they tore everything apart my frame was bent at where the hitch hooks up. Just work the shit out of the insurance guy after your hospital bills. I got $2000 "pain and suffering" on top of medical bill payout.. which then was reduced by the medical people. Got away with a good $3k+ in my pocket for less damage than you. You'll be fine if you play the game correctly.

 

That aint too bad dude, should be as good as new.
