can our composite truck beds hold a car motor?

i searched. i am planning on bringing a 911 race motor back from portland. not sure about weight, guessing 400-500 lbs? will all the hardbits crack my bed? i have seen some threads about the beds cracking? i figure the composite material is pretty strong, but a concentrated loaded bouncing up/down?

i'll lay down some plywood, and strap the thing in for sure.

 

rest the motor on on old tire, and then strap it in. the tire will cradle it, and act as a shock absorber.

done this several times, never in a taco though, but it should handle the weight fine

 

^ that is a good idea with the tire. Just make sure you strap it down correctly and it wont damage anything

 

I transported one in my old 2007 Access cab. We set it on a tire and had it leaning back on the tailgate and strapped the shit out of it. It was scary at first but the Taco handled it well.

 

i've had a big block chevy(454) and a turbo 400 auto trans in the back of mine with no problems, it made it sag in the ass alittle

well if your worried about the weight it will be more than fine i have had a ton of crusher fine in the bed and i drive an 08 reg cab 2wd.

but if your worried about scratching just put a piece of ply wood in the bed and yes the old tire is a great idea.

but deff make sure you tie it down correctly! if you need to hit the breaks hard and its not tied down right that would be a situation haha.

Why do people keep asking if a truck with a 1200+ lb payload can handle 500lbs in the bed?

As said before, steel really isn't that strong in the great scheme of things, it's just cheap for the amount of strength you get out of it.

 

highly doubt it would crack the bed. doesnt the composite sit on the metal bed?

 

There is no metal. The bed is made of composite material.

Which, for the record, is quite a bit stronger than steel by weight.

 

He was just wondering if that jagged structure of the engine in a specific spot in his bed would crack it... Heck somehow... I don't know how... but the front of my bed is cracked... I hate that composite crap. It just fiberglass mesh.

if not how does the tacoma at the dealer with no bed liner get explained? they sell a truck without the composite bed?

 

well anything has a breaking point even the stongist of things, IMO its better to just ask instead of finding out the hard way i have deff done that more than once, but thats just my 2 cents....

 

the bed liner is the composite bed, get under your truck and take a look there isnt any metal or at least that i have seen...

Valid point about concentrated load on a point. Hadn't thought of that.

Steel does indeed bend...but it also corrodes and is heavier. I prefer the composite bed.

Yeah, aficianado made the point. Essentially, in a steel bed, the same situation would result in a mondo dent, which I can see being less problematic than a crack.

The SMC is a fiberglass reinforced compound. Exactly which compound Toyota has yet to specify (and probably won't). But yes, the lack of ductility is the only significant downside. Although a bed mat pretty much solves that issue, one could validly argue you shouldn't have to buy an accessory to make your vehicle impact resistant.

 

the one i seen was a brand new 2010 base model 4x4 i believe but it had no composite bed.. just steel.

 

I transport my 4 wheeler in the bed of my Tacoma whenever i take it anywhere and have never had a problem with.

 

Other than when I decided to drive it through my back window.....but that is a different story.
