How does your dog get in/out of the truck?

No kidding! I've got two Golden Retriever's which are both over 75lbs and they're having the hardest time getting into the cab or the box. (tsb rear)

It's starting to get annoying considering i gotta lift them both in and out of the cab and/or find a hill to back up to so they can get themselves out of the box.

I've decided to go with a rubbermaid tote for now, until i can find a better solution. (tried folding step stools but there not tall enough nor do they have a big platform for the dogs to feel comfortable to jump down to)

So my question to all of you is,

How do you get YOUR dogs into the truck?

 

my beagle usually has to jump twice, but he can get into the cab with some effort

 

I have a Aussie cattle dog , she does fine all by herself

I have had German Shepherds and had to lift all of them in the truck - they all got bad hips in mid life, and is the reason I never got another - hurt to lose them they were such good dogs

 

try having a ramp that you just keep in the bed

 

My beagle hates to ride in any vehicle. I have to lift him in.

 

My lab (45 lbs) has no trouble jumping in or out of the cab or the bed. She's even been known to jump out of the bed without the tailgate down! (once I unhook her from her harness) Fearless I tell you.

 

I have a golden retriever/australian shepher mix...kind of short legs. Have had to lift him into the cab. Just put n-fabs on yesterday, haven't tried to see if he can get in with the step yet or not.

 

My two springer spaniels can jump into the back of the truck on the seats just fine or the bed for that matter. Although living in the Northwest they have been trained only to put their front paws on the nerf bar when I open the truck door. This way I can dry them off before they get into the back seat.
I did notice my oldest female though looking at me for a lift from time to time. Especially after a couple of hours in the field pheasant hunting. Small price to pay. Ken

 

Buy a pet ramp. That is the best if they can't make it on their own. My Malinois just jumps in...gate open or closed.

 

I use this, from Petco, but you can probably find it for less.

 

The bulldog stands sideways and waits for me to hoist his fat ass up. Probably slip a disk after the lift goes on next week.

my pitbull just jumps into the cab, he can jump into the cab of my friends dodge with 20" of lift and 44" tires.

 

Both of mine jump right in - Ollie, 10 yo, 65 lbs and Annie, 4 yo, 60 lbs. I have an access cab and the back seats are folded down and they don't have a problem getting in. I put the steps on to give them help and Ollie uses them occasionally, other wise jumps right in the back seat. They don't ride in the bed.

 

I've got a 60lb female Lab and she jumps up on the tailgate or in the back seat with it folded down, and then right into her crate. However on the way down I help her as I don't want her to blow out an elbow or front shoulder. I bought her as a breeding bitch and don't want anything to happen to her until I get a bit of my money back!!!!

 

I have two Labs and they would rather ride in the truck than anything. I have them put their front paws inside the cab and I lift their rear legs into the truck. Ramps are too much trouble and they are too big to jump in.

 

My golden retreiver jumps right into the back seat of my DC, and I have the rear TSB done as well. How old are your dogs? Mine is only 1 1/2 years old, so she's got plenty of energy.

 

71lb Golden I have to pick her up due to hip dysplasia. 78lb yellow Lab jumps.

 

Wow, thanks for the replies and the ideas. My male is 96lbs and my female is 79lbs and they'll both be 5 years old this March/April.

The ramps seem like a great idea, especially since they seem a to be a light weight, portable solution. It also seems much easier on their joints than to jump that far down. Unfortunately, they're fairly costly. Most are over $70 and all the way up to $130+ up here in Canada. I guess that's a small price to pay for my back and my dogs well being.
