My 4x4 clunks when driving

Every once in a while I feel a big hesitation or jerking when in 4 wheel drive. It is almost like it slips and then grabs dry pavement...or it could be a rear brake hanging up then letting loose. Or maybe the differential comes unlocked and then relocks....

It happens briefly then I can drive 4 weeks and ...everything is fine...then one day ...it happens again.


Has anyone ever had a similar expierence?

Normal stuff for those conditions

4X4 is not for dry pavement wheels must have the ability to slip or your diffs will bind and mess you up big time
ie: gravel, snow, wet ...

 

You shouldn't be in 4hi for four hours let alone four weeks! It is just to be used on loose road surfaces where it is required for traction - not dry pavement.

 

Length of time doesn't really matter. I have driven my rig in 4Hi for a complete day of trail runs.

I do concur on the not on dry roads.
To the OP- Are there any conditions or things you do that seem to make it happen (like turns, bumps, etc etc)

 

No driving on the roads in snowy conditions...but then some area's are plowed

 

And NO ..I don't drive for 4 weeks continually in 4 wheel HI...

I am saying that ...in snowy conditions (WISCONSIN) sometimes it will work just fine...and then...maybe 3-4 weeks later when I have to engage the 4x4..I am driving along and then ..its like it happens...then everything is fine again...

 

are you saying it's happening when you engage 4wd or while your driving in 4wd?

 

It happens while I am driving...
