And don't worry about whether the auto will be as "bombproof" as a manual or not. I used to think manuals were more bombproof too (and once upon a time that was the case). But autos are so much better now, and if you get the tow package on your new Tacoma, they come with a supplemental transmission cooler which will help keep the auto tranny cool offroad too. The truth is they all can fail on you at the wrong time. Sure autos can quit on you, but a manual can lose it's throwout bearing or burn out the clutch. More often than not though, it's not the tranny that'll quit on you anyway. I worry more about ABS sensors and electronic throttle controls failing than anything ... and manual or automatic, your stuck with those sorts of things either way.

The gearing is important and is the primary reason for fuel savings at higher highway speeds. But in regular mixed driving the auto also does better than the manual (again unless you refine your hypermiling technique), and one of the reasons is because the computers are so much more efficient at shifting than a foot to clutch is.

I've also been told that Toyota's new computer algorhithms for things like variable valve timing favor a computer controlled transmission because it's predictable - it removes the manual human component and therefore the engines are expected to last longer (and I'd rather replace a tranny than an engine these days). That's also another reason why something like 90% of vehicles manufactured are now autos of some sort. Even traditional manaul sports cars like the Corvette or Porsche Boxter now offer autos or autos with an available manual mode.

    Too few to list.
I have a manual. I specifically bought one because that's what I wanted although it was hard to come by at the time in my color and configuration but it was out there. My cousin has the auto and driven his truck a few times and it's a more comfortable drive but not as fun. The 6spd is not as fun in traffic though but I'm rarely in traffic. It all depends on what YOU want. I have no regrets on my choice.

i kinda wish i had gotten a manual-- the auto is really jerky at times and has weird shift points compared to any other vehicle ive driven

If you spend a lot of time in traffic I would consider an automatic. Nothing worse then stop and go day after day with a stick.
    Other than that, manual FTW.

Love my manual. Wouldn't have it any other way. I just installed my TRD CAI and it is much more fun to drive. The throttle response is awesome and makes shifting better. I would get too bored with an automatic.

How is it faster? You can't push in the clutch and shift as fast as the auto can shift. I've had several manuals and never found this to be true. Off the line maybe but as soon as you push the clutch you're all done.

In a car, I found I could usually be faster in a manual because I could push it in each gear longer, where an auto might shift when I wasn't ready.

That said, that doesn't work in my Tacoma. To get a smooth shift, I give a good pause between gears. If I push it to higher RPMs between shifts I guess it's not so bad, but bottom line, I don't usually accelerate fast in my truck.
