Ok, I came across a 2007 DC TRD at a used lot today. Beautiful condition with 12,000 miles. As I was looking underneath it though, I found a good amount of surface rust. It doens't appear to penetrate deep, just covered alot of undercarriage componenets. I live in western Colorado (very arid), so I was a little surprised at this.

My first thought was that this might of been an auction vehicle from a coastal state, but then I wondered if maybe this is normal?

So, should a year old truck have surface rust on it?

    Thanks,
    IBCGUY

I would be suspicious of an 07 with 12000, and why it's on the lot, repo, maybe a flood car

Suface rust all over my frame and welds. Paint is good. 4 winters of salt freeze/thaw will do that. Think I first saw some the 2nd winter.

Its common where there is salt to get surface rust after a couple winters...really sucks IMO. I'm getting mine rust proofed and undercoated right now.

Yea living in the northeast I didnt want the salt to eat my baby so I had it undercoated by the dealer, and it looks like they did a good job. They undercoated it, then sprayed a rust proofing agent on certain critical areas.

SALT= RUST. My Taco has been on the road for 7 months- since last Sept. Dealer undercoated and rust prevention sprayed. In B.C. we now have liquid "saline solution" sprayed on our roads .If you are unlucky enough to be passed by a saline truck you get a salt carwash! Hard to believe that in these Eco- friendly days we are still using earth killing salt and salt- substitute products that get into the water table and generally F-up the landscape.Oh yeah, my truck has 12000 km and a rusty frame. I wonder if Toyota will be offering us all deals down the road like they do for 1st gen owners whose frames have disappeared. My feeling is that we wouldn't have lots of these problems if it weren't for SALT !

It wouldn't be surprising to me that a Colorado truck has rust because at least metro denver salts their roads. I've had some surface rust that I've since cleaned up.

My 2007 is showing surface rust on the frame after it's first New England winter. Most of the rust is on, or adjacent to welds. There is also significant rust on edges where no paint was applied. I'm planning to wire brush and paint over the afflicted areas. Seems a shame to have to do this on a brand new truck. I hope the 2nd. generation trucks don't have the same corossion issues in their future as Gen. 1.

Speaking of undercoats...I know there are DIY spray cans for that....anyone done it to their Tacos, and what I should look for?

You all need to be aware of the recall on certain Tacos due to a defect/problem with the frame prep. Toyota is buying back Tacomas for 1.5 times KBB if frame rust is deemed to be an issue.

Certainly DO NOT buy a used Tacoma with an obviously rusting frame...

    Hi gang,

I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma. It has 66k on it and all the welds are rusted and scaling. The frame bolts look like they have been on dock their whole lives ! I'm soooooo disappointed. I had a 94 with over 200k and the frame was as black as the day I bought it. I have it in the shop now. I doubt they will take action on it this early since there is no "perforation" but I have no doubt its only a matter of time.

Anyone else have a rusty frame on an 07 ?

I sure do. Dealership showed me small hole...well..a hole big enough to have frame replaced. Told me it would be 3 weeks at beginning of Feb 2015 and after 3 weeks they told me it was on back order. I read elsewhere in here and a few said it would be around June or July before they got theirs so I am planning a few month wait. Also with the hole in frame they said it was ok to drive at this poimt.

I have a 2007 Tacoma and in February, they said Frame rust is not bad enough for replacement, so they sprayed the frame. I'm finding out the spray will trap moisture and cause rust problems down the road. Time to formally complain to corporate.
