Its rare I get a day off, so I spent the day making some mod's to my 2010 Tacoma.

    1. I did the foglight anytime mod, great write up, works great.:D
    2. Did an oil change. Got a toyota filter from the dealer, and it appears substantially different from the filter I pulled off the truck. Same size. But the filter on the truck appeared better made. Heavier metal, welded seam, and more substantial gasket. The one on the truck says made in Japan, the one from the dealer says made in Thailand?
    3. Manual says 5.7 qts w/ filter change. It took 6, and still doesn't read full?
    4. Switched all the bulbs, in and out to LED, looks way cool!

Finally, I put a new hu in- which went easy - these things are super easy to run wires in! But while pulling off the a pillar, my hand slipped and i hit the dash with a screwdriver scraping it. Its a black dash, but the mark looks like the tan of the rest of the dash... Is it tan underneath? Any ideas on repair?

Are you on a slope of any kind for the dip stick not to read correctly? You don't want to over fill the crankcase. The dipstick on these are a little tricky to read. Some members scuff the dipstick with sand paper, seems to help.
As for the dash :notsure: and

Fair question. Yeah, perfectly level, and let it sit overnight. I got 6 quarts in, and it reads about 2cm below the full mark. Im not gonna add anymore, but it seemed odd that it was off...:anonymous:

Other than trying to find some matching paint... not sure what else you could do to fix that.

The 4.0 should only take about 5.5 quarts (I've never put more than that in.. always perfect every time). I also use K&N oil filters, always consistent quality and I've never had a problem in many years of running them.

Here is the new head unit. Its a no-name brand - Valor. But for $129.00 its got a DVD player with outputs - which ill hook to a rear screen, IPOD interface, and bluetooth. So far it works!

Throw it on the buy/sell/trade here. There's plenty of faulty stock radios that I'm sure someone would bite on it...

And finally here is the LED mod. Did all the exterior, except turn signals, since I want to do the DTRL relay mod - and not sure how that will work.

The 2010 already has LED tail/brake, and I added LED 3rd brake light. Also did the dome lights, awesome. Got everything from superbrightleds.com

Yeah Ill grab some. Its the 2010 non-jbl, looks a little different than the older ones, but appears same size. I have that for sale, and a 200W Bass Canon that came out of my old Jeep - won't fit in the new Tacoma...

I'd say you're ok with the oil level. The oil doesn't have to hit the max mark. As long as it's over the min mark.

Was this by any chance your trucks first oil change... the filter from the factory is usually a bit different and on pretty tight.

Well, that explains it. As far as your oil level... Your ok as long as your not below the low mark, or over the high mark. These dip sticks are hard to read and take some getting used to. Like already mentioned, scuff it up to make it easier to read.

The filter that comes on new tacomas is from Japan. It's hard as hell to find them after that. The ones you get from the dealer (or from Ebay, where I buy mine) are all made in Thailand. I haven't heard of anybody having a problem with the Thialand-made filters.

If you do a little searching you'll find a few threads about the merits of the two filters. You can probably find the Japan filters if you REALLY set your mind to it, but you'd be better of buying a high-quality after market filter.

So when people on here say they are running an OEM filter, they are all getting Thailand filters...? Just wanted to make sure dealer wasn't screwing me.

Dealer's not scewing you. I run the OEM filter, and mine say "made in Thailand" on them. I never saw a "made in Japan" filter on my truck, b/c I bought it well after its first oil change.

I get mine on ebay for $40/case of 10.

I was running the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter but have now switched to the Purolator Pure One filter. It's half the price of the Mobil 1 filter and the oil seems to be filtering better in the Purolator.
