Taco in Borrego

Took the new Tacoma out for its' inargural offroad trip this past Thursday.

Really impressed by the low range power, especially since we have the 2.7 liter 5 Speed.
Put it in 4 Low shift into 1st and the Taco just crawls..
Went up some pretty good hills and crawled across some pretty rocky sections of trail.
Did notice the mud flaps seem to get in the way and I almost ripped off one of the rear ones.

 

sounds like fun. those 2.7s are pretty torquey for a 4 banger.

 

That is what I was hoping.

Still miss having the manual hubs and the transfer case lever but hey I guess I'll get use to the dial.

Well I think your Pre-Runner is good for 2-3 mpg better gas mileage.
Actually looking at the Pre-Runners versus the 4x4 you really can't tell the difference.

I have heard that the Pre-Runner with the rear locker (TRD?) actually performs really good off road.

 

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE MY TACOMA! I am however looking for a locker or a LSD rear. I just have to find the money tree first!

 

Thats a nice pic. I've been dieing to get mine off-road, thinking about going to Big Bend sometime this spring and give the locking rear a try.

 

Since are SR5 did not have the factory electric locker I am going to look into 3rd party options.

I kind of like the idea of the ARB Air Locker but I am still looking into it.

Our FJ Cruiser has the rear locker and it really makes a difference offroading.
