    Here's a link to a newspaper op-ed piece that gives some really good thoughts on the recalls, and some talking points to use against our "friends" who are hammering us about owning Toyotas:

    Or how about the Ford Fusion Hybrid with sofware issues with the brakes...simliar to the Prius. Nearly 18,000 of them effected. You barely heard about it. And the 1.3 million GM cars (mostly Cobalts) with power steering that can fail while you're driving it...yet GM's owner (US government) is focued only on a few complaints of Corolla steering issues.

    Has Toyota handling everything right? Maybe not. But this is a witch hunt...plain and simple.

    Recall totals:
    GM = 3498
    Ford = 2691
    Chrysler = 2419

    Toyota = 569

    I agree that the Government and Media are blowing this out of proprtion, but unless those other recalls involving GM, Ford, or Chrysler are being linked to deaths (allegedly or otherwise) the issue is different.

    I love my Taco even with it's faults. My RAV just clicked over 110K miles and I still had enough confidence in its reliability to drive my family from Chicago to Port Canaveral FL in February.

    The majority of auto manufacturers now use Drive By Wire systems. Toyota by far isn't the only manufacturer to be heavily scutinized regarding safety issues with Drive By Wire but since they are considered to have deep pockets they are singled out to be the poster child.

    What most people don't realize is that Drive By Wire systems are primarily a response to tightening emission standards. Replacing the mechanical linkage and cable controls with highly advanced and precise electronic control sensors theoretically improves engine efficiency while reducing vehicle emissions.

    The problem is that anyone who has ever worked in telecommunications knows that ANY wireless telecommunications link no matter how simple, sophisticated or fail safe can suffer interference. The isolated safety issues is the price you pay for the insistence upon using this type of technology in a place that it should not be. Our illustrious governments, in their naivety, ignorance and zeal to satisfy special interest zealots are the real culprits in all of this foolishness.

    Good article but the Wall Street Journal and Popular Mechanics have both had write ups about the tech aspects of the "problems" which really show how overblown the hysteria is.

    For those of you who have been following the story of David Gilbert and his assessment of the Toyota throttle system...you might find this link interesting. For the last few weeks or so Gilbert as been hyping up a test that he conducted where he claims to have discovered a "hidden issue" with the electronic throttles in Toyotas...a problem, that when it occurs, isn't even stored in the car's ECU.

    Anything can be made to "fail" if the right test is administered. However, that raises the question...is the test relevant in the real world? That's been what many auto experts have been asking of Gilbert's test. Is it even something that could occur in a real world sitiuation? It does not seem to be.

    Listen to this guy rip David Gilbert's little experiment a new one.

    Very well written article. As for the media and our government, it is a crusifiction of Toyota for GM Ford benefit. You will not hear a whole about GM or Dodge or Ford problems.

    Here's Dave Gilbert on ABC. Admitting to shorting out 2 wires under the hood and then providing power to the 3rd wire via a circuit board on the dash. Yup, that recreates real world conditions. Sometimes I reprogram my ECU while I'm going down the highway on long road trips to pass the time.

    "60 Minutes" (I think) did a similar hatch job on Audi in the '80s--disabled or modified 26 different devices on the car, and it suddenly accelerated all by itself. :rolleyes:

    I guess "they" have to report on something now that global warming is cooling off...

    It's likely that Toyota has made some mistakes. If nothing else their percieved "slowness" in responding to this was not good. But watching idiots like Gilbert and the government for that matter try to chop up Toyota is not fair, IMO. They are capitalizing on Toyota's mistake to bolster their own agenda.
