Kobalt toolbox install w/ grip rites

    So I bought the Kobalt "low profile" at Lowes yesterday, $148, can't beat that! Installed it today using the 'Grip Rite' system, which can be found in the same vicinity of the toolboxes. I used two of my tie down cleats to hold the 'Grip Rites' tight against the bed rail. I originally used the existing T bolt that was with the cleat, but had a hard time keeping it lined up. So instead I used a regular hex bolt & 3/8 washer. Took a couple hours total for everything.

    You'll want to take a few measurements from the front of the bed to figure out where you'll mount the grips. Mine ended up being about 7 inches from the front. Onto the pics....


    This is how everything is put together: Hex bolt, washer, nut, Grip Rite, cleat.

    Take your bolt, washer, nut and slide behind the rail. Then slide the Grite Rite on and tighten the cleat enough so everything stays upright.

    Now, in order to get everything super tight you need to have something holding the bolt as you turn the cleat. Took a while for me to figure this part out. Use an appropriate sized wrench and insert into the bed rail from the back of the truck. Slide it up to the front and work it into place. It might take a few tries to get it in the right spot but once it's in your good. Finish tightening the cleat and repeat on the other side.

    Measure twice, drill once. I used the bolts & washers that came with the 'Grip Rite' system PLUS a rubber washer on bottom and an extra nut on top. Without the extra nut on top I wasn't able to get everything tighten down all the way.

    This is a great setup, easy to remove if you ever need to. I'm thinking about having it powder-coated black....we'll see. Anyway, if your scared about using J hooks or drilling into the rail, DONT! This way might take a little longer but it ain't coming loose.

    I did mine in a similar way.... just used a normal bolt and ground down washer to hold the plastic piece to rail....

    the grip rites are 30 dollars, i have the same box and used them also, just in a different way.

    I used the grip rites with mine as well, have a regular kobalt tool box on mine (not low-profile) but have had it on there almost 2 years and havent had a single problem out of them :D

    Yes definitely! I did NOT want to drill any holes in the truck if I didn't have to, and like I said they've lasted a long time, well spent money, nice toolbox as well :)

    Just an Idea for the wrench in the bed rail, if you take a screwdriver and push it bed hind the bolt head and pull out it holds it place tight and looks a little easier. Nice write up man, I REALLY need one of these and I will use your idea.
