Hey guys. I put a magnaflow catback on my 09 V6. It sounds good most of the time, but when the auto transmission shifts gears and bogs down the engine, the sound is unbearable. It's most noticeable around 1500 rpms.

So I have two questions. (Actually the second one is technically not a question)

    1. What have you guys with magnaflows and autos done to cure this?

    2. Other auto transmission owners, please chime in with what other brand of exhaust or muffler you have, and whether you have a problem similar to mine.

    Thanks.

    just a couple comfort items.
Was the stock one burned out or loud or something? I think they are a low grade of stainless. Pretty durable and Quite too, No droning and they flow about as well as anything for that v6.

I wanted an aftermarket exhaust with a good sound. I just wanted that sound to be consistent at all rpm's.

Do you recall the size of the muffler? Was it the one that comes with the magnaflow catback (5x8x18" oval)?

Maybe I need a bigger muffler to cure this problem?

I just solved my problem! (with your help).

I chopped the tailpipe off so that the exhaust is dumped after the axel. I mostly did it for a clean look, but it actually changed the resonance frequency of the exhaust, and I have absolutely ZERO drone now. Sounds great!

Many thanks to you. By posting that you had a magnaflow with auto and no drone, you let me know that my problem wasn't something that was un-solvable.

Have there been any other solutions? auto V6 '10 here with the same drone. I don't like the idea of chopping just yet; I like the way it looks.

    Whoa thread bump!

I think the fact that mine was cured by chopping it was more coincidence than anything. Not saying that this would cure other drones.

A resonator before the muffler would be more likely to cure your issues.

I need some help in this area. I have a TRD muffler on my ride and the drone is starting to drive me nuts. It only odoes in at low RPMs.
I have a V6 AUTO. I really need to cure this before I go nuts, my wife hates to ride in the truck now because of the drone. It seems to have just started about a month ago. I have had the exhaust since this past summer.
Any ideas?? I dont want to cut and dump but if that is the cure then I am busting out the saw.

Old post, I know. I just wanted to add my experience to the knowledge base here. My truck is an automatic transmission 4.0, and after installing a Borla pro xs muffler (40358) I was getting a drone at lower rpms under load. After reading this thread I chopped the exhaust to dump after the axle and the drone has disappeared. Exhaust seems a little quieter now overall. So this worked for me too. Cheaper than a resonator and better clearance for off-road.

I'm facing the same choice right now with a Magnaflow muffler and URD Spec-U 2.75" cat-back. Where exactly did you cut the exhaust? I'd like to cut it right after the last hangar, but I'm not sure that will remove enough pipe to eliminate the drone.
