Question Installed the AFE CAI on my 2005 Tacoma. Review and one simple question...

Hey guys, installed the AFE CAI on my 2005 Tacoma 4.0 V6. Install was great, no road blocks, took about 30min (leisure pace at that). Just a couple questions (yes I searched): How long does it take for the ECU to get used to the new intake? The first start up, almost died then proceeded to normal. I read that that was normal after the install. It did feel a little sluggish the first 5 or so miles. It is getting more back to "normal" feeling but I was just wondering how long it takes. I realize it may take some time. On a side note, I'm surprised at how mine seems to be semi quiet. I read on here that some peple say it sounds supercharger like. I took my to over 4K getting on the freeway and it still wasnt that loud. Maybe people are just exagerating I guess. I'll post up any other details that I find out over the next couple weeks including my mpg and possible power gains. Thanks a lot in advance for any one who replies.

Just reset your ecu by unhooking your neg. wire from you battery for a while (30 min max should be good).

Enjoy the new toy..........Not sure about a time frame, did U get the pro-dry S filter?

If not, beware of over-oiling any non-dry filters.

Believe me I'm not holding my breathe for the HP. I just had the intake sitting in my garage and said "WTH, I'm bored lol" Yes, its the pro-dry s filter. I'll look into the MAF but to be honest if it requires that, might just take it off. I was happy with the stock engine in the first place but unless this thing wakes up big time (I'm giving it a full gas tank) I'm ditching it. I'm not expecting better mpgs either....

My CAI is pretty quiet when I am driving at normal speeds, but when I get on it roars!

Yea I hope too. The throttle response seems better but not where I expected it. It was more responsive if you were say.. in 5th gear (I have a manual) and didnt down shift to pass a car, you just stepped on the throttle, that's where I feel/felt it. I was expecting right off the bat in 1st, 2nd, etc but wasnt too impressed there. Seems to fully kick in after 3500 rpm...below that, cant really hear or tell a diff.

so the post should read AFE air intake, right?

technically, even the factory setup is a cold air intake...It draws cool air from the fender area.

AFE has the SI deal right, so the filter is in a fully enclosed box except for the intake area that looks like it feeds from the factory location?
Yes, this set up is fully enclosed except the one side that mounts to/over the factory air intake outlet from the wheel well. I think it might be considered a true cold air intake because this intake draws the cool air from the same set up/location as factory like ^ said above. Also, snce the TRD abd AFE are essentially the same thing, they both say on their website "cold air intake"

Let's say you gain 5hp. Do you really think you're going to notice when you already have 235hp? Not to be a jerk, but you are talking about a 2% increase.

Talking

I am very happy with this 4.0 V6. Even with my 35's, 6 inch lift etc it still has gobbs more power than my 3.4 1996 did. I just got back from driving and I think things are beginning to turn around. A lot less luggish, more responsive etc. I guess ole' betty needed to get acquainted with this new intake Thanks for all the replies

The difference between the URD and TRD is that just like the AFE they pull the air like you said from the fender area, sucking in warm air thats under the hood off the engine. The URD CAI wraps all the way around in front of your grill hitting the fresh air that theyre site says brings in 30-40% cooler air. But at the same time you are right, wheeling and submerging it would end your day and without the MAF its just for looks, no matter what you buy.
