Should I get another Tacoma?

I have been thinking of getting rid of my 07 Tacoma. I use it as a work truck and travel 1000 miles a week. I was looking at other trucks and for the price I can't find anything comparable. I have some issues with the Tacoma's but for resale and reliability it seems to do well. I just can't get past all the problems people are having with them. I have been looking at the Honda Ridgeline's and for a traveling truck it seems to be great. I don't prefer the seat height, squeaky/saggy springs, driveline shutter or the lack of paint/clearcoat,wind noise, or vague steering on the Tacoma's. I do like the resale, reliability, overall looks and the fact that it leads it class by far. I'm looking to get a quad cab truck for around $28,000, and that seems to be a chore. I don't want a w/t model truck though. What's a guy to do?

As compared to what? Are the other trucks out there that much more superior in the reliability department?

That said, if there are all those things you don't like about the Tacoma, don't buy one. Test drive the hell out of all of the vehicles, inspect them, research them and then buy the one that fits your needs the best. Don't buy a Tacoma because people tell you to, buy one because it's what you want.

 

I know I won't be. My next truck will be a diesel, either a ford or gm but probably ford. Get the same fuel mileage and same reliablilty, if not better and will have a real truck that I can do real work with. Resale is usually pretty good with the diesel pickups too.

So, why are you wanting to get rid of your 2007? Is there a particular reason?

Seatheight is a personal thing... not much to do there.
Lack of pain/clear... I dunno my truck has paint and a clearcoat. It's weak paint, but honestly almost every vehicle these days are. Keep it washed/waxed and off the trails and proper distance behind big rigs... it'll hold up just fine.

Squeaky/saggy springs? Perform the 4 leaf pack TSB or get a dakar leaf pack. As for squeaky, power wash the crap out of the leafs... mine's quiet as a whistle. Or if you really hate the setup, get a full OME set and darkars or such in the back.

Wind noise I'll agree is a bit high, but also fixable. First, check the windshield out for leaks as there was a TSB. Second, do a search for soundproofing, a guy put some weather stripping around the doors insides and cut the noise down by about 80% I think he claimed. Some sound dampening material will also drastically cut it back, as well as not running AT/MT tires.

Vague steering... I don't know what to say for that one. My truck is solid as a rock and I beat on it out in the desert. Tracks straight, firm, good response for a powersteering modern setup. Sure there's some disconnected feeling... it's not a sports car it's a truck.

Most of those issues are pretty easily fixable with some light modd'n, and a lot cheaper than replacing the truck. Just another option to concider.

Personally I'd avoid the Ridgline at all costs. It's a unibody truck... which... really makes it not a truck. The 4x4 system (if interested in it) is really just FWD with a piggy back rear.. not a true 4x4 system like the taco.

Well, I have alot of equity in it right now, and don't want to loose it to high milage and in a work truck. So, I'm going to get rid of it and get my equity out of it and start over. It has 52,000 miles on it right now, and I figure if I wait, it will have 80-90 on it in no time and will have lost much of it's resale value. I don't think I will consider the Ridge. I have read rumor that this will be the last year in production. I don't need a fullsize truck, but alot of them are claiming to get the same mileage as our Tacoma's. I guess I'll just have to go out and put some time in driving, and pricing the options. I really hate doing car deals.

 

you're losing more money in the long run. that taco is good for another 150K

I say keep the older Tacoma you always end up doing better driving a veicle for it's full life span because you have to pay taxes pdi delivery interest ect again.

x2, my '07 double cab was less than 28,000 brand new. I looked at the Ridgeline before I got my Tacoma and couldn't find anything good to say about it other than it rode like an Accord. If you use your truck to haul anything, I would imagine that split rear axle would be a maintenance nightmare. They seem too much like an overglorified car than a truck to me.

Tacoma gets my vote but get what you want, you're the one that has to drive it.

 

I am on my 3rd Tacoma now (1 Gen1, 2 Gen2)

Until another truck enters the market with such style and design I will stay loyal.
