    Amsoil! FTW! ;)

Seriously, I'm happy with either Mobil1 or Amsoil - all depends on what I've got on hand when it's time for an oilchange...

Everything in my yard now runs either Mobil1 or Amsoil.

I'm a little skeptical. I've been using Pennzoil Platinum since day 1, and my gas mileage just went up too. I'm thinking your increased mileage has more to do with either a) the warmer weather, or b) oil companies have started to change over to summer blended fuels.

more mpg has many factors.. all it does as far as mpg goes is create less resistance which will not give you a whole 1 mpg gain imho. you will see better gains by adjusting your tire psi 2lbs. or watching if your windows are down/up and many other factors... you wont see real mpg gain if you swap all fluids to syn opposed to keeping your airfilter/tire psi accurate etc. etc. syn oil mpg gain is a hoax. yes it will help but will you notice on a calculator? no

Thanks for tracking your data on the switch
I switched to Mobil 1 because its $22 for a 5 gal jug @ walmart & matched with a $3 Toyta oil filter (bought in bulk) equals a pretty inexpensive synthetic oil change. $$ in my pocket = :bananadance: & truck is happy. :)

I agree. The OP is elated that when he switched to Mobil 1 he noticed an increase in mileage. I think the sensible apporach would be to recognize other factors such as a mostly highway drive to Vermont had more to do with the increased mileage than switching over to Mobil 1; or any of the other factors you had mentioned in your reply.

Went to Amsoil.com to review every test synthetic can be put thru and Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec came out on top, i prefer Synpower by Valvoline and it's warranted for 300K for what that's worth. Since switching to synthetic i have noticed more engine noise from valvetrain IMO. 60K.

I changed all my lubes to synthetics, best estimate is a 1mpg gain ....for $100 or so ( dont remember) in gear lubes & motor oils. My dad has always used regular oil and his toyota has 200k -230k on it. I'm sure synthetic is better, but in real world use and proper servicing its questionable if its worth it.

Yea, i'll use synthetic again on my next oil change, i don't know why. Maybe its like a beer commercial, some really hot lady gonna saunter up to me because i chose the right oil, are we believing what they are upselling.

To visualize the difference between synthetic and dino oil here is best example
VW Tdi 1.9 , warming up when ambient temperature is 10F
With DINO oil takes around 5- 7 minutes to warm up to normal temperature
With Mobil 1 0-40 it will never warm up.....
Simply its that much of less friction generated.

Just to clarify I am talking about idle. So when engine is idling it consumes so little fuel that fuel by itself will not be enough to warm up the engine. While with DINO oil, fuel + friction allows engine to warm up in minutes.
My other car had electric fan for radiator that was connected to thermostat.
When idling with AC on fan would turn on sporadicly when car was running Mobil 1 5w-30. where with DINo oil, a radiator fan would run constantly while idling.

    Syn's have three better aspects
ONE - low temp pour points
    TWO - high temp protection
THREE- last longer than conventional oil

other than that they have no magic qualities - consistent lubrication due to the uniformity of the molecules ......... what a laugh

well maybe one - they seem to empty the wallet faster than conventional oils

If you change out the oil at 3-5000 miles /operate in a temperate climate 20 degrees to 100 degrees your vehicle will last as long as if you used syn oil.
    Those are the facts

BUT - just as there are those that think their vehicle runs longer, faster, better with high test gasoline there are those that will never be convinced syn oil isn't the ultimate magic elixir

hey, i want all the skeptics to know, that 1 yes it was a ll higway mileage, but i compared it to all other highway mileage that i always do anyway. like i said, i drive highway all the time and never got above 17.4, i now am gettin almost 19. thats it, call it voodoo, call it hoopla, call it a rainbow, i really dont care, i just want all to know that changing the oil did this for me. and i am satisfied. :)
