    2 questions..

    1. You think I could put on a OEM rack on the cab (and keep my thule on the shell)? Or would it look silly?

    2. The top of my thule bar sits 4.5" higher than my shell, could someone (with the OEM rack) measure the height of the main bar off the cab? THANKS!! If it is at or just under 4.5 that would be cool.. if not, I think it would look mental to have my kayaks slanted upwards..

Those of you who have a yakima roof rack I have a few questions. I this roof rack on my SUV and trying to put it on my tacoma. I been having one hell of a time getting the towers to fit. Aren't they universal. When I close the towers the bottom rubber mount lifts up. I can't get the mount to hug snug. I am missing something? Thanks

The towers are universal, but each vehicle has it's own q clips.

I recently put on the OEM racks and spent sometime looking at the Yak's. The clip is a Q45 and there are some tid-bits you need to ask when installing them on your taco. Call a local shop would be my advice... Just to be safe.

Had to take my racks off to get into a parking garage in Waikiki that was only 6'4". I don't know about other trucks, but my d-cab / l-bed with shell looks naked with my racks off.

Here is a pic of my '07 with the setup you're speaking of....I'm not sure of the measurement of the OEM off the cab but I can say for certain that it is lower than the Thule on the cap. One of my buddies has the truck now and carries his Kayaks and canoes with it. My '10 just has a Thule setup on the cap and no OEM.

Hope this helps a bit. :)

I have the OEM on the cab and Yakima on the cap. Mostly because I regularly carry 16' sticks of trim. The Yakimas on the cap line up in height almost perfectly with OEM on the cab. I have had both Tule and Yakima, both are quality pieces and I have loaded both with many hundreds of pounds with no problems but I prefer the round bars of the Yakima because it's so much easier to hook bungies onto. Just remember anyone using the two rack setup...don't strap too tightly to both as the cab and bed flex at diferent rates quite a bit.

Yea it occured to me right after I dented the roof on my last truck without the OEM rack on the cab! Rolled the control towers on the cab back and forth enough to leave nasty dents, now I just strap the front ever so lightly and let the trim rub on the crossbars. A scuffed up cross bar is much mo better than a dented roof!

WHen you clamp the towers on the truck, does it mess up the paint or is it pretty protected? Anybody have up close pics of how they install?

    White Taco 02,

I had the clamp on's (both Thule and Yakima, sorry no pics) on my previous Rangers and there was no chance of harming the paint with either set in my experiences but with a very heavy load OR if your strapping a long load to both the racks on the cab and the racks on the cap it caused the towers on the cab to "roll" back and forth, leaving nasty indentations in the roof of the cab. My solution on the Taco was to install the factory racks on the cab (speading the load out over the longer "runners")
and to strap loads spanning both racks much more loosley to the front rack to make up for the flex between the cab and the bed. I regularly carry somewhat heavy 16' boards on my roof however and this might not be an issue for most. As far as how solid the OEM rack on the Taco is...in your hands before installation it feels very flimsy, but after everthing is bolted up it is much more solid and I am very happy with it. Hope all this makes sense and helps with your question!

I'm thinking about going OEM on my new DC. Anyone tried loading a canoe on one? I'm wondering if the crossbars are wide enough and if the extra pressure from strapping tightly will be too much for the roof or crossbars.

I have the OEM bars with Thule cross bars on them and will be hauling a white water canoe tomorrow so I will let you know. You should have no problems.

Cool, thanks! Why are you using the Thule crossbars rather than the stowaway bars? How long is your canoe?
