upgrading speakers/adding a sub

2010 TRD offroad Access cab

Does anyone know about just upgrading the factory speakers? And adding a sub. I don't need to have my ears blown out, I just want clear, accurate sound at moderate levels.

Are there any companies that make speakers that would use my existing speaker mounting locations without visibly modding it? (except the sub of course)

Would the factory head unit have enough power to drive premium speakers cleanly?

As far as a sub I have an 8" JL Audio that serves my needs fine. Not sure what size the speakers are but I'm sure ones in whatever size they are are readily available. However the rear ones I believe are in the ceiling. So that may be kind of a pain to get to. I'm sure you'll hear improvement, but aftermarket speakers will naturally always sound better with an aftermarket head-unit. I have the stock HU and speakers and just added the sub. Not as good as the stock Bose system in my previous car with an aftermarket HU and 12" sub that I had, but it works fine for my needs I'm no audiophile.

 

Would you be able to post a picute of your sub? Where did you mount it? I have an access cab and was thinking on the rear wall between the seat backs

 

will notice better sound out of a new HU than you would with new speakers with the factory deck. Start with the HU and go from there. You will be supprised how much more clear a new HU will make your factory speakers sound

 

I actually just have it on the floor behind my front passenger seat, and in front of the rear seat. With the rear seat down it JUST fits in between. Wasn't looking for a fancy setup, so it works. Have my amp under the back of my front passenger seat. I was surprised at how good it sounds for only being an 8". Here is a factory picture of the sub, and I'll take one of how it's set up in my truck when I run out in a bit.

Do agree with the poster above that an aftermarket HU will make the stock speakers even sound better.

 

there's a lot of misconceptions about bigger subs being better... 8 is just fine. unless you're into some very specific kinds of music....

 

Yea, I just didn't think it would hit the lows as much as it does. Definitely was pleasantly surprised.

I'm going to once again recommend the BOSS low-profile sub/amp combo. Not only is it cheap and easy, it's 1200w and sounds AMAZING. It fits directly under your drivers seat as well.

Thats what I have, and I am constantly getting complements on my system- and the best part is, it wastes absolutely no space.

 

Hey bradley, ive been looking at that for a few months. cant decide if i want to go this easier route or spend a fortune behind the seats with subs and all the goodies. Did you make any mods to the seat so that it would fit? you got pics? you still running factory speakers?

Yeah I'm curious about that setup too....I've been reading the reviews on Amazon and it looks pretty sweet! I've wanted more bass for a while but I didn't want to carve out the plastic behind my back seats

 

i did what you are thinking of doing and it didnt work--the sub was to much and when i turned the bass all the way down and treble all the way up with the factory head unit--it was still way to much bass,sounded like shit.i ended up just doing it all from the head back.they stock door speakers are junk,all four together were about the weight of one of the ones i installed

Justin would you be able to make a scaled down version of that for an 8 sub? I really like your design, however its just too big for what I want. If the whole thing could sit level with the cup holders I think it would be perfect.

I have put building them on hold for a bit, I want to do them on a more specialized basis, instead of always having a running build list hanging over my head
