Okay guys, sorry i did not take PICS on this simple cleaning project.

I only removed the complete throttle body so i could clean it well and on both sides of the butterfly.

Secondly, I learned from my uncle who has been a mechanic in business for over 25 years and the guys at LC Engineering to use non chlorinated brake cleaner to clean simple sensors like the air flow sensor. It wont hurt it, only clean it, however i suppose (98tacoma27) knows a little more than me so yes you can use MAF sensor cleaner. The air sensor gets way dirty even with K&N oil, non chlorinated brake cleaner is non-chlorinated so it wont harm the sensor.

Thirdly (aces2) yes you can disconnect the neg battery if you'd like however when your truck is idling high you are going to have to reset the computer and the easiest way is to just pull the pos battery cable call it a day and reset your radio and you have no idling problems from disconnecting the air flow sensor and throttle by wire plug. But to each there own, disconnect the neg cable and it may work just fine, in my situation it required the pos cable to be disconnected.

Again sorry guys if i was a little vague, pop open your hood learn your engine and follow the simple steps i did and give yourself about 20 minutes to clean your throttle body, reassemble everything and taddaaa!! A cleaner healthier 4.0 and happier, show our engines some love.

There is not really a gasket, just an o-ring type thing, mainly an aluminum throttle body that mates to a hard plastic intake manifold. I didnt replace mine, i suppose you could but its not necesssary.

I just removed and cleaned the TB... it wasn't that dirty and really does take less than 20 minutes. By the way, what is the MAF sensor and where is it?

The MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow) measures how much air is going into your engine. To find it, it is showing in the little cutout square when you have your engine cover on. But to remove it, take off the cover, use whatever torx or screw driver it has and it will slide out. But like stated before, it is very fragile and very expensive.. so be careful..

I just did this last night, WOW was it every dirty, it was BLACK!! I am guessing the guy that had this truck before me had some type of air intake something like a k&n or something that sucked in a lot of dirt.

Anyways did this and changed spark plugs and it runs a lot better.

it seriously only takes about 20 minutes, well im not sure if it takes longer with a stock air intake or not, I have a cai. But ya took no time at all, also I just used a can of carburetor cleaner and tooth brush, took all that black crud off like nothing.

Familiar with other Toyota engine intake cleaning, but not the 4.0 L yet...is there a small idle air control passage that also needs cleaning? (idle air passage allows air around throttle plate when engine is idling) If dirty on other models, effects idling smoothness.

not that I saw, It seems as tho the plate that turned and opened inside to allow air in stays part way open for idle. not possitive, but if there is another air passage I would love to know so that I can clean it. I am pretty sure there wasnt tho.

From what I can tell this is the equivalent to the IAC on the 1GR. It is not part of the TB assembly.

so I would have to take apart that big black thing that the throttle body feeds air into?

I actually wouldn't worry about it. A good seafoam treatment should take care of it.

I looked for sea foam when i bought carb cleaner but couldnt find it at canadian tire, I wonder where else I can find it in canada. Also I dont think sea foam could have cleaned out all the black shit in my throttle body, there was a lot of it.

Ok so I can get seafoam at napa, if I am going to use a vacuum line to suck it up which one should I use? I read I should put some in the oil, some in the gas and suck some up with a vacuum line.
